Dylan Alcott won his seventh straight Australian Open wheelchair quad singles title and his 12th Grand Slam singles title, beating his US Open winner Sam Schroder in straight sets in the wee hours of Thursday morning
As Rafael Nadal and Stefanos Tsitsipas’ match extended into a fifth set at Rod Laver Arena, Alcott and Schroder’s final moved to Margaret Court Arena and started after 11 p.m., with Alcott looking of the song from the start
It would take a little over an hour for Alcott to win 6-1, 6-0 by adding a seventh Australian Open singles trophy to a cabinet that includes two French Open titles, a Wimbledon and victories at the US Open
Alcott’s victory comes the same week he and Heath Davidson sealed victory in the wheelchair double quad final
There had been a push online for Wednesday night’s final singles match to be postponed until Thursday, when crowds would be allowed to return to the tournament, but the match did eventually come to pass.
Alcott’s tennis resume continues to strengthen, with eight doubles Grand Slam titles coming with gold medals at the 2016 Paralympics
