Ebene News – AU – Collie’s new mega mural has something to give a dam

Prime Minister Mark McGowan urged Western Australians to’ discover ‘the world’s largest dam mural, which was officially unveiled in Collie this morning

Took four months to complete and features footage of Collie mine workers, families playing in the water, Native children, and other scenes taken from actual photographs of Collie’s story

Prime Minister Mark McGowan said the mural was a ‘key part’ of Labor Party strategy for Collie’s future

“The Wellington Dam mural puts Collie on the map as a major tourist destination for WA and the nation,” said M McGowan

M van Helten, who slept in a tent there for more than 130 days, said he enjoys immersing himself in the city’s history

“The title is a game not only about the natural environment which is really beautiful, but also about the memories,” he said

“I was looking for a collective memory that could speak for all the different communities that have lived in this place

“I feel really lucky to be here to work on this it’s a huge responsibility so I really worked as hard as I could

On Twitter, the Prime Minister urged Western Australians to “go down to the South West and check it out”

“The photos are great, but trust me – it’s something you must see in person,” he wrote

The cleaners rappelled down the wall to prepare it, while the builders designed a special scaffolding platform to paint it

The design has been drawn and mapped to a grid to help M van Helten to translate his concept drawing to a mega-mural at scale

The mural is the centerpiece of the Labor Government’s 5 million dollar Collie Mural Trail, intended to draw visitors to the area
