Having celebrated the birth of his first son with a goal, but not a win, Tomi Uskok wants the gift of victory when his Western United side host Macarthur FC at Ballarat on Saturday

Uskok and his wife Antonia welcomed baby Marko to the world just four days before United’s last clash, their February 7 battle against the Central Coast Mariners is Gosford

It seemed like the perfect end to an already special week for the United vice-captain when he scored in just the fourth minute of a game at Central Coast Stadium

But although United hold a 1-0, 2-1 lead, they have lost 3-2 to this season’s surprise packages

“I felt like we didn’t deserve to lose the game, but that’s the way it is

“We must learn from this If you don’t show up or if you shut down for five, 10 minutes or half an hour, you end up losing the game

“We really need the three points against Macarthur, and we’re pretty confident that we can get there”

But regardless of Saturday’s outcome, Uskok said the safe arrival of Marko, a brother of Eva, 2, and Emilija, 14 months, reminded him of what really mattered in life

“Family is always the most important thing for me so it’s good to have another healthy child brought into the world,” he said

“Thank you my God for that It puts everything in perspective when you are stressed by work”

After making six appearances for the Mariners at the age of 24 in the 2015-16 season, the former Melbourne Knights center-back did not have another top-level opportunity until February of the last year

He has hardly missed a beat since then, United coach Mark Rudan acknowledging Uskok’s maturity, poise and leadership by giving him the post of vice-captain

“I appreciate that It’s good to have the confidence of the coaches and the players, but mostly I like to play every week,” he said.

Due to COVID-19 restrictions, the crowd at Mars Stadium on Saturday will be limited to 4,000, with fans required to wear masks when moving around the venue and when leaving their seats to use the equipment, buy food and leave the field
