First Sea Lord, Admiral Tony Radakin, says technology displayed on HMS Tamar is game-changing

Dramatic video footage shows a Royal Marine using a jet pack to board a Royal Navy ship during an exercise near the south coast

The naval chief said the kit was ‘game-changer’ by sharing the exercise film on Twitter

It shows the Marine in a jet suit taking off from a fast rib (rigid inflatable boat) and flying through the sky to land cleanly on the deck of the patrol vessel HMS Tamar

The full footage shows him throwing a ladder so his colleagues can board the ship

The Marines would otherwise have been forced to use a helicopter, with one person descending one rope at a time – a much slower and more vulnerable operation

First Sir Lord Admiral Tony Radakin tweeted: “As the Royal Navy embraces technology and innovation, HMS Tamar tests the latest revolutionary kit with the Royal Marines”

It has already been tested by paramedics in the remote and rugged Lake District to reach people in danger or in distress in a fraction of the time it would take to travel by car or on foot

The Royal Navy has been working with Gravity Industries for some time A ‘rocket man’ carrying a jet pack buzzed the aircraft carrier HMS Queen Elizabeth during an exercise in the United States two years ago

HMS Tamar recently left the A&P shipyard in Falmouth with a new ‘dazzling’ design of irregular gray shapes to break up its outline – a nod to the warships that adopted the paint scheme during the World Wars

Lieutenant General Robert Magowan succeeds Major General Matt Holmes as the corps’ highest ranking officer

Lt Gen Magowan takes command as Royal Marines adopt new technologies and tactics, and plan to be a consistent presence in strategically important regions of the world as part of the Future Commando Force

“For centuries, the Royal Marines have gone about their business, navigating difficult sites with quiet courage and pride,” said Lt. Gen. Magowan

“To be among them, to be part of them, to encourage them to go a little further, to climb a little higher, is a huge personal honor for me, and it will always be”
