Ebene News – AU – The Royal Australian Air Force celebrates 100 years of service with 60 planes over Canberra

Former and current members of the Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) honored with over 60 aircraft over Canberra

Today marks the 100th anniversary of the transition from the Australian Air Corps to the Australian Air Force, with King George V approving the use of the word “Royal” in the name in June 1921

Ancient and modern planes featured in this morning’s flypast included a Super Hornet, Black Hawk helicopter, C-130 Hercules, MH-60R Seahawk, Boomerang, Spitfire, and Canberra bomber

This large-scale event was an opportunity for the Australian Air Force to remember those who lost their lives in service, while paying tribute to their efforts in multiple conflicts from 1921 onwards

Canberrans watched the display from vantage points around town, along the lake, and at peaks such as Black Mountain and Mt Ainslie, with police closing major thoroughfares around 9:00 am and asking drivers to avoid areas around the lake

The Spitfire, a single-seat fighter used by the RAAF during WWII from 1942 to 1945 in northern Australia and on the island of Morotai, is one of the oldest aircraft to feature in the flyover

The Lockheed Hudson was also an attraction for aviation enthusiasts, the only one of its kind in the world to still fly

Over 11,100 RAAF members lost their lives and over 350,000 served in the force

During this morning’s ceremony, Governor General David Hurley presented the service with a new regimental flag, or color, to mark the special anniversary on behalf of the Queen

Although no longer worn in battle, the colors are symbolic, constituting the honor of a unit or service and representing their dedication to duty

The new Color received a royal salute and a flyby as it slowly walked into position

Indigenous Aviation Officer Coomara Munro was chosen to receive the new color at the ceremony in Yarralumla

“The opportunity to be the Queen’s standard bearer for this parade is a tremendous opportunity and responsibility as the Queen’s color embodies the traditions, achievements and history of our service,” said the Flight Lieutenant Munro

M Hurley spoke about the work of the RAAF in modern times, highlighting its role during the 2019-2020 bushfires to help with firefighting and relief efforts

“There is no doubt about the reassuring presence of the RAAF in times of crisis,” said M Hurley

Prime Minister Scott Morrison spoke about the sacrifices made by RAAF personnel during the force’s history in a social media post

“And we remember the more than 11,000 members who made the ultimate sacrifice for their country and whose names are engraved on the honor roll of the Australian War Memorial”

We recognize the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples as the original Australians and traditional custodians of the lands where we live, learn and work
