Ebene News – AU – Victoria’s COVID-free streak ends

Victoria’s 61-day virus-free streak was halted after three mysterious cases were detected that allegedly spread from Sydney

British experts have traced the origins of the mutated virus in South Africa

The cases are present in two women in their 40s and a woman in her 60s from the eastern Melbourne suburb of Mitcham, Mentone and Hallam

More than 40 primary close contacts are being supported for immediate isolation and extensive contact tracing is underway, said Jeroen Weimar, COVID-19 response commander in Victoria

M Weimar said active cases were of concern but everything was being done to ensure all relevant exposure sites and close contacts were identified

“We have three cases that are self-isolating at home and are taken care of and monitored by the Department of Health and Social Services,” he said

“We have been in this position before and we are deploying our comprehensive approach to the epidemic around these cases”

M Weimar said contact tracing continued overnight as the team confirmed the evidence as to how these cases were presenting and closer contacts should emerge

“At this point, our priority is to make sure we have the right supports in place for close contacts (primary and secondary) and that people get tested”

DHHS was unable to say whether the cases would be linked to NSW’s COVID-19 cases, which on Wednesday recorded 18 more cases, including nine linked to the northern beaches cluster

M Weimar said the location risk will be updated as more information becomes available

This came as an NSW woman, 57, from Bateau Bay, was arrested after allegedly avoiding a COVID-19 checkpoint in East Gippsland on Wednesday

Victoria Police allege the woman – who is from a designated red zone – escaped the Chandlers Creek checkpoint by speeding around 4 a.m. after an earlier attempt to enter Victoria, where she had to come back and apply for a permit

The woman was arrested in the afternoon without incident and taken to do 14 days of quarantine at the hotel

Subsequently, she will be questioned for offenses including life-threatening behavior, failing to stop on police orders and violating the chief of health’s instructions

Under the border changes unveiled by Victoria on Wednesday, those who have been to the Blue Mountains or Wollongong areas from Sunday will have until 1117:00 on New Years Eve to enter Victoria

They will also need to apply for a new travel permit and get tested within 24 hours of returning and self-isolate for 14 days from departure
