Musician Dave Dobbyn, former CEO of Air New Zealand Rob Fyfe, Professor Michael Baker, public health expert and Professor Shaun, Covid-19 modeler Hendy is among those named to the honors list of the New Year

Two people have received the highest honor, the Order of New Zealand: Professor Emeritus Sir Mason Durie for his transformational approach to Maori health and Distinguished Professor Dame Anne Salmond for her work on cross-cultural exchange and environmental issues

Former Consumer New Zealand Managing Director Suzanne Chetwin, Black Fern Kendra Cocksedge, former cricketer Debbie Hockley also received praise for their work

Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern congratulated the list of recipients and praised their work during this difficult year

“Professors Anne Salmond and Mason Durie are rightly recognized for their tremendous contributions to New Zealand in many fields, including the sciences and social sciences in Maori education and health

Dobbyn joined former MP and Speaker of the House David Carter, former TV presenter Ian Taylor and one of the founding directors of Te Panekiretanga o Te Reo Māori (The Institute of Excellence in the Maori Language ), Professor Pou Temara, by becoming Knights Companions

“Dave Dobbyn is responsible for some of our most popular Kiwi anthems and has been in the music industry for five decades,” Ardern said of the Slice of Heaven frontman

The Prime Minister’s Chief Science Advisor, Professor Juliet Gerrard, and Professor Cynthia Kiro, who led the development of a formal Maori te reo policy at the University of Auckland, have been appointed Dame Companions

Suzanne Snively has been named Honorary Dame Companion for her work as President of the New Zealand Chapter of Transparency International since 2011

“Juliet Gerrard is rightly recognized for the role she played in putting science at the center of our concerns or in our decision-making, including during Covid-19 Cindy Kiro has done so much to ensure good -be children of our country, and Suzanne Snively is a tireless worker in ensuring transparency in the public and private sectors, “said Ardern

Fyfe and Chetwin have been named Companions of the New Zealand Order of Merit – Fyfe for his services to business and tourism, and Chetwin for consumer rights Former cricketer Hockley has joined them, for his work in sport

Two of the most important names in the Covid-19 pandemic – Hendy and Baker – have also been recognized for their efforts, becoming members of the New Zealand Order of Merit

Other notable inclusions on the New Zealand Order of Merit list include Cocksedge for his contributions to rugby and Professor Bronwyn Hayward, Director of the Sustainability and Civic Imagination Research Group from the University of Canterbury

Ex-Prime Minister Jenny Shipley’s husband Burton Shipley was awarded the officer title for his work in the basketball administration, and Assistant Associate Professor James Tully was named for his accomplishments in journalism

Thirteen Pacific leaders were included in the New Year’s honors, representing a range of sectors such as health, education, community, arts, sports, media and the public sector

“These Pacific recipients have all shown leadership, dedication and tenacity with a heart for the Pacific, and each made a real difference which has had an impact on the communities they have worked with,” said said the Minister of the Peoples of the Pacific, Aupito William Sio

Afamasaga Vaafusuaga Telesia McDonald Alipia’s participation in early childhood education in the Pacific was celebrated with the title of Officer, while Reverend Tumama Vili, a staunch supporter of the Samoan and Pacific community in the broad sense of the South Island, has been appointed member

“This is just a snapshot of the important contributions made by all Pacific grantees and highlights the tremendous role they have played in supporting our Pacific communities,” Sio said.

Ardern said the main theme of this year’s list is that while the work of honorees has made life better in New Zealand, the work continues

The New Zealand Royal Honors System is used to thank and congratulate people for their community service and to recognize achievements There are 154 recipients in 2021, including athletes, conservationists, scientists, health professionals, judges and educators
