Beloved Toronto bakery founder SanRemo dies after battling COVID-19

Natale Bozzo, founder of longtime Etobicoke Bakery SanRemo, has died aged 75 after contracting COVID-19

Bozzo’s family announced on Facebook Thursday evening that after six weeks of battling the coronavirus in hospital, the Patriarch has “lost his devastating battle”

“He fought really hard, he was in good health before that, and we learned of his failing health through some very difficult phone calls from the hospital and luckily we were able to say goodbye”, said the family

Bozzo, who immigrated to Canada at the age of 15, started SanRemo with his two brothers in 1969 with a loan from his uncle

He took sole ownership with his sons in the 90s, turning SanRemo into a bustling cannoli and pastry center with a hot Italian table and espresso bar

His sons described him as “a master baker” There was nothing their father couldn’t do, and no problem in the kitchen that he couldn’t solve

Bozzo immigrated to Canada at the age of 15 and got a loan from his uncle to start the bakery

“He said the secret to baking is putting a pinch of love in everything, and we’ll miss that pinch in a way we can’t describe”

Bozzo has started to move away from the business in recent years, allowing his sons Robert, Edward and Nick to take the helm

The brothers say Bozzo returned from retirement last April to help SanRemo transition from onsite dinner to curbside delivery and pickup

Since Bozzo’s death, thousands of regulars have sent kind words to the family on social media, including condolences from Premier Doug Ford, who called Bozzo “a true local champion who followed his passions “
