LAS VEGAS – Nazem Kadri scored 41 seconds to go in the third period, propelling the Colorado Avalanche to a 3-2 victory over the Vegas Golden Knights on Tuesday night

Moments after Marc-André Fleury stopped Mikko Rantanen’s backhand with 453 seconds to go, the Avalanche got the best end of a right-circle face-off, eventually putting Kadri in place, who managed to lift a loose puck into the net for his second winner of the season

The teams split the first two of four games over a nine-day period, with the third scheduled for Saturday in Lake Tahoe in an outdoor setting

Despite its third loss in regulation, Vegas (10-3-1) remained in first place in the West Division with 21 points Colorado (8-4-1) is in third place with 17 points

MacKinnon only scored his second career goal in 10 games against the Golden Knights, his first inside T-Mobile Arena in Vegas, when he once passed Mikko Rantanen’s pass to the machine in front of Fleury

As they did in the teams’ first of four games, a 1-0 loss on Sunday, the Avalanche appeared to be the more efficient team on both ends, controlling pace and edging the Knights 9-7 in the first period, even after going through the final 6:03 without shooting

Vegas, meanwhile, struggled to find its rhythm, with chemistry disrupted by untimely penalties and skating six of the first 20 minutes shorthanded

Pacioretty, who scored Vegas’ lone goal in the first meeting, leveled the game from his familiar spot on the ice, shooting with the wrist from the top of the right circle It was the fifth time in his last eight games, Vegas scored at least one power play goal

Saad responded 63 seconds later, skating past the bottom crease of the left circle and slipping a backhand through Fleury’s pads to give Colorado a one-goal lead again.

With Grubauer flat on his stomach and facing the post, Marchessault tied the game up to 2-all in the third period, when he returned a backhand through three Avalanche players to the top of the net It was just the second 5v5 goal for Vegas in 229 minutes and 53 seconds, spread over five games.

The teams will play the third of their four games in Lake Tahoe on Saturday, before making the final in Denver on February 22
