WINNIPEG – Auston Matthews scored his 24th league-leading goal and goaltender Jack Campbell improved his season record to 7-0-0 as the Toronto Maple Leafs beat the Winnipeg Jets 3-1 Wednesday to extend their lead atop the North Division at Three Points

Adding to the woes of the Night Jets, Captain Blake Wheeler saw no action after the first period There was no immediate word on the nature of the problem

The teams meet at Bell MTS Place on Friday as Toronto continues its four-game road trip

Zach Hyman and Alex Kerfoot also scored for Toronto Mitch Marner, with two assists, scored his 13th multi-point game of the season

The Leafs were 0 for 5 on the power play, prolonging a drought that dates back to March 9 But they scored shorthanded

Winnipeg, back home from a seven-game road trip, had won four of its previous five, including a 5-1 victory on Monday in Calgary But it trailed 2-0 after a slow first period that saw Toronto dominate despite a 0 for 3 power play record

The Leafs were just losing 3-2 in overtime to visit Edmonton on Monday Toronto had won their previous three outings, including two in overtime, rebounding from a poor streak that saw them lose six of seven

With No 1 goalie Frederik Andersen returning to Toronto awaiting further assessment of a lower body injury, Campbell started for the fourth time in the last five games. Campbell, who missed the Edmonton game on Monday with a lower body injury, made 26 saves for the win

It was the No 299 career game as a throw for goaltender Connor Hellebuyck, who stopped 23 shots Only Ondrej Pavelec (379) has played more than 300 games for the franchise

Matthews opened the scoring at 4:40 to punctuate a clean opening for the Leafs Hyman led the net and Winnipeg’s Pierre Luc-Dubois and Derek Forbort met, leaving Matthews to score from close range

Matthews has scored the game’s first goal six times this season Marner, with an assist on Matthews’ goal, extended his points streak against the Jets to five games this season, the first Leaf to record a five-game streak consecutive games against Winnipeg

Hyman made it 2-0 at 10:47 am, pushing the puck up close after Matthews hit the post following a magnificent Marner stroke – which left the rookie defenseman six-foot-seven inches Logan Stanley slip into oblivion – as the Leafs lead line invaded the Winnipeg net The Jets challenged unsuccessfully for goalie interference on Hyman

Toronto had a 13-2 lead in shots before Winnipeg reduced the margin to 14-6 at the end of the first Hyman had six shots alone in the period

The Jets had more life in the second, edging Toronto 16-7 in the period But despite three straight penalties in Toronto, they had to settle for trading goals with the Leafs

Paul Stastny appeared to lose a tooth after taking a TJ Brodie stick to mouth at the end of the period as the pain in Winnipeg intensified Kerfoot scored shorthanded on the minor double penalty that followed, edging Morrissey after the puck came out of the Toronto zone

Morrissey redeemed himself by scoring on the same power play, his shot beating Campbell in traffic at 5:15 pm, with six seconds left in Brodie’s first of two minors

NOTES: The Leafs were the last North Division team to visit Winnipeg this season The teams split the first four games in Toronto… After playing 12 of 14 road games, the Jets will play 10 of 15 next home meetings from Monday
