Ebene News – CA – Twenty-two killed in attack on Aden airport after new Yemeni cabinet arrives

ADEN (Reuters) – At least 22 people were killed and dozens injured in an attack on Aden airport on Wednesday, moments after a plane disembarked with a newly formed cabinet backed by Saudi Arabia for government-controlled parts of Yemen

Prime Minister Maeen Abdulmalik said all cabinet members were “fine” But the attack highlighted the difficulties facing a government intended by Saudi Arabia to unite two of its allies in the war against the Houthi movement aligned with Iran

Hours after the attack, a second explosion was heard around the Maasheq presidential palace in Aden where members of the cabinet, including Maeen as well as the Saudi ambassador to Yemen, Mohammad Said al-Jaber, had been taken to safety, residents and local media said

Loud explosions and gunshots were heard shortly after the plane arrived from Riyadh in the airport attack, witnesses say A local security source said three mortar rounds landed in the airport lobby

The cabinet gave the death toll on Twitter, quoting the Home Secretary, and said 50 people were injured Humanitarian group Médecins Sans Frontières previously said 17 people were treated for injuries in his hospital in Aden

The Saudi-led coalition said it shot down an explosive-laden Houthi drone targeting the presidential palace

“We and the members of the government are in the temporary capital of Aden and everyone is fine,” Maeen tweeted from Maasheq palace “The cowardly terrorist act that targeted Aden airport is part of the war waged against the Yemeni state and its great people”

Jaber tweeted: “Peace, security and stability will prevail thanks to the strong will of the Yemenis and their courageous government”

The new cabinet unites the government of President Abd-Rabbu Mansour Hadi with the separatists from the south, with the aim of achieving the Saudi goal of ending a feud between the allies of Riyadh

The two groups are the main Yemeni factions in a southern-based, Saudi-backed alliance fighting the Houthis who control the north, including the capital Sana’a

Television footage from Saudi channel Al Arabiya showed dozens of people leaving the plane when a first explosion hit the airport hall Heavy gunfire from armored vehicles followed, with plumes of white smoke and black rising from the stage

Government officials were among the victims of the airport attack, sources say Two staff members of the International Committee of the Red Cross were killed in the airport attack and one was carried missing, the ICRC said in a statement

The southern port city of Aden has been mired in violence due to a rift between the separatists and Hadi’s government, based there after being driven from the capital by the Houthis in 2014

The Southern Transitional Separatist Council (CTS), which seeks independence for southern Yemen, declared autonomy in Aden in April, sparking clashes and complicating UN efforts to forge a ceasefire -permanent fire throughout the conflict

The Saudi-led coalition announced the creation of a new power-sharing cabinet this month after more than a year of intense Saudi mediation between the government and the separatists

“I wish the cabinet the strength to face the difficult tasks ahead,” Griffiths said “This unacceptable act of violence is a tragic reminder of the importance of urgently bringing Yemen back to the path of peace “
