CALGARY –
After establishing new daily records on the number of cases in the province, Premier Jason Kenney said tougher public health measures for Albertans will be announced on Tuesday

The prime minister did not provide details of the plan during Monday’s briefing, but confirmed that the cabinet committee that decides on public health measures will meet to discuss the plan

The province put in place targeted measures last week targeting areas with high active cases, but province-wide measures governing the use of restaurant terraces and in-person learning for kindergarten and primary students have not been changed

Retail purchase restrictions in Alberta are currently at levels set in Stage 1, announced on April 6, where stores are limited to 15% of fire code capacity

Outdoor social gatherings have been allowed since January 18 with a group size limited to 10 people, while all indoor social gatherings remain banned in accordance with measures set at the end of 2020

The cabinet committee on restrictions will meet on Tuesday and Kenney said the group will also share advice for further enforcement of the rule violation

“There is a difference in behavior here,” Kenney said. “What we want is for people to follow the rules, (we are not introducing) rules for the sake of the rules”
