Ebene News – GB – 2020 has been a hectic year on the pitch for Leeds Rhinos – and even more outside

Leeds United weekend hosts Tottenham Hotspur have called off the game due to Covid-19, but Premier League says season continues

This improvement continued as coach Richard Agar’s team won the Coral Challenge Cup for the first time since 2015 – which was an unexpected bonus – and hit their pre-season goal of to rank in the top five

The coronavirus pandemic, which closed the sport from March to August, and the fate of Rhino legend Rob Burrow, who was diagnosed with motor neuron disease (MND) in December 2019

Leeds immediately launched a fundraising appeal to support Burrow and his family and the first major event was a pre-season match against Bradford Bulls in January, initially staged as a testimonial game for Jamie Jones-Buchanan

He immediately offered to share the profits with Burrow, and a room full of 20,000 went to Emerald Headingley to see Burrow – along with the other members of the Golden Rhino Generation – make one final appearance.

Leeds also recorded an encouraging pre-season victory at Wigan Warriors that month, but their Betfred Super League campaign got off to a miserable start in February when they were crushed 30-4 at home by Hull

Only one of those teams looked capable of making silverware this year – and it wasn’t Leeds – but after that setback the Rhinos started to gain momentum, recording impressive wins over Hull KR , Salford Red Devils and Warrington Wolves, when Jack Walker suffered a broken foot and Richie Myler stepped in as an emergency full-back

Leeds’ most successful coach Brian McDermott returned to Headingley on March 5, but his newly promoted Toronto side Wolfpack were put to the sword 66-12

Leeds were due to visit the Catalans Dragons the following week, but – the day before the game, which was to be played behind closed doors – they opted not to travel after Joe Greenwood, on loan, showed possible symptoms by Covid-19

RFL threatened “sanction” against Rhinos, but then decided not to take disciplinary action Three days later, the rugby league was suspended due to the pandemic

Later that same month, Rhinos rugby director Kevin Sinfield ran a solo marathon to benefit the Burrow Fund and raised £ 10,000 and in April the sport’s layoff was extended, Rhinos players and staff being on leave

Rhinos scholarship coach Mark Butterill joined England’s youth backstage staff in May, when Greenwood returned to parent club Wigan without playing a match for Leeds, l injured striker Stevie Ward showed new talent, acting in a radio drama and 12 players from the club’s women’s team have been named to England squads

Liam Sutcliffe has submitted a transfer request, young Rhinos Loui McConnell and Liam Whitton have signed with Featherstone Rovers for 2021 and Brad Dwyer has signed a new two-year contract

Hooker Kruise Leeming made his debut, against his former club, when Luke Gale’s golden goal earned the Rhinos a 27-26 victory over the Huddersfield Giants in their first game after lockdown on 2 August Back-to-back defeats to St Helens and Wigan followed before Leeds returned to victory over Salford

That month teenager Liam Tindall signed a full-time contract, James Donaldson was recovering from a broken back suffered against the Giants and Bodene Thompson from Toronto joined Leeds on loan, along with the duo Featherstone Rovers Brett Ferres and James Harrison

In September, Leeds scored two victories over Huddersfield and Hull KR – the second marred by Harry Newman’s broken leg – before a second-string team, including a host of young beginners and the returning Walker, be beaten by the Catalan dragons

Myler has signed a new two-year contract, but Dom Crosby has announced his retirement due to a long-term knee injury; Big club Ray Batten passed away, on his 75th birthday, Dwyer went into isolation after testing positive for Covid-19 and Adam Cuthbertson signed for York City Knights

October was all about the Challenge Cup as Leeds produced a superb wet-weather performance to beat Wigan over the past four weeks and two weeks later Gale’s goal secured the trophy by the smaller of the margins against Salford Red Devils at Wembley empty

The Rhinos avenged their loss to Hull and the Youngsters put on another brave display, against Warrington, but the Cup success was followed by losses to St Helens and Wakefield Trinity, on both sides of the a win over Castleford Tigers

Sean Long has been confirmed as the Rhinos’ assistant coach for 2021, replacing James Webster who returned to Featherstone Rovers but joined the club early in November after Agar was forced to isolate

Leeds won at Wakefield to secure fifth place in the table, but a 26-14 play-off loss to the Catalans Dragons ended their season

Also in November, Mikolaj Oledzki extended his contract until the end of 2024, Newman was named Super League Young Player of the Year and Konrad Hurrell and Ash Handley, the competition’s top scorer, were included in the Dream Team

Sinfield’s feat of raising more than £ 2million for the MND Association by hosting seven marathons in consecutive days dominated headlines in December

Thompson agreed to a two-year deal and young Muizz Mustapha joined Hull KR on loan after also signing a new contract with the Rhinos

Leeds signed Zane Tetevano, Penrith Panthers’ New Zealand test prop, but Ava Seumanufagai was released from her contract for ‘personal reasons’
