A “big fire” broke out in Bridgwater and Taunton College with 15 fire engines on site
Teams from across the county frequent the arts and technology building on College Way, Bridgwater, to prevent the blaze from spreading
The fire was reported after 03:00 GMT, with residents instructed to keep their windows closed and avoid the area
Andy Berry, principal of Bridgwater College, said it was “unlikely” that anyone was on campus
The Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service said all sections of one floor of the building were involved in the blaze
A spokesperson said: “We currently have a large fire involving a university building We are asking people nearby to keep their windows closed”
M Berry, who is also the university’s CEO, added: “That sort of thing, I just hope no one else is involved and everyone is safe
“This is a fairly large building that once housed our engineering facilities, now it is linked to a motorcycle maintenance shop
“To have that like, fingers crossed, we were hoping the government will announce an easing of restrictions and bring our students back, this is absolutely the last news we wanted”
He added that as a multi-campus college, he hopes they will be able to minimize the impact on students
Since the lockdown, the campus has been open to its most vulnerable students and those whose parents are critical workers, but Mr. Berry said its scope was “limited” and described the burning building as having been “silenced since Christmas”
It follows a bill that would force the company to pay publishers for content
