Ebene News – GB – Edinson Cavani banned for three games and fined for posting on Instagram

Manchester United striker Edinson Cavani has been banned for three games by the Football Association for using a racial term on an Instagram post

Cavani posted a social media post to Instagram shortly after the game, responding to a congratulatory post using the Spanish term ‘negrito’, which translates to ‘black’

The Uruguayan quickly deleted the post and issued an apology after being made aware of the connotations, with the player posting an apology statement the next day saying he was “completely opposed to racism”

But the FA has charged the forward with “foul for breaking FA E3 rule” in connection with his social media post on December 19 and has now banned him for three games

The FA said in a statement: “Edinson Cavani has been suspended for three matches, fined £ 100,000 and is to undergo face-to-face training after admitting a charge of breaching the FA Rule E3 in connection with a social media post on Sunday, November 29, 2020 “

The statement continued: “A comment posted on the Manchester United FC forward’s Instagram page was insulting, abusive, inappropriate and brought the game into disrepute contrary to the FA’s E3 rule1

“The post also constitutes an ‘aggravated offense’, which is defined in rule E3 of the FA2, as it included a reference, express or implied, to color and / or race and / or ethnic origin

“An independent regulatory commission has been appointed to decide on the sanction and its written reasons will be published in due course”

Cavani will miss the New Years game against Aston Villa as well as the Carabao Cup semi-final against Manchester City and the FA Cup third round match against Watford

United have argued that the striker should not be charged as it was an inadvertent mistake by a non-English speaker and are hoping the £ 100,000 fine will be used to support anti-racism projects

The club said in a statement: “As he said, Edinson Cavani was unaware his comments could have been misinterpreted and he sincerely apologized for the post and to anyone who was offended

“Despite his sincere belief that he was simply sending an affectionate thank you in response to a congratulatory message from a close friend, he chose not to challenge the charge out of respect and solidarity with the FA and the fight against racism in football

“While it is clear that context and intent are key factors, we note that the Independent Regulatory Commission was required to impose a minimum three-game suspension

“The club hope that the Independent Regulatory Commission will make it clear in its written reasons that Edinson Cavani is not racist and that there was no racist intent in connection with his post”
