Ebene News – GB – England & Tottenham great Jimmy Greaves receives MBE in New Year’s Honors list

Jimmy Greaves’ contribution to English football was awarded an MBE in the New Year’s Honors List

Greaves, who turned 80 in February, was joined by former midfielder Ron Flowers to become the last surviving member of the 1966 World Cup-winning England squad to be honored

Greaves scored 44 times in 57 appearances for his country, but an injury in the last group game of the 1966 final saw him lose his place in the squad to Sir Geoff Hurst, who went on to scored a hat trick in the final victory over West Germany as Greaves looked sideways

Until 2017, Greaves held the record for most career goals scored in Europe’s top five leagues – 366 – with Portuguese superstar Cristiano Ronaldo the man who ultimately passed him

He joined AC Milan just before the maximum salary was abolished in England in 1961, but although he continues to score goals at an impressive rate, he did not settle in Italy and returned in England with Tottenham before the end of the year

He went on to become one of Spurs ‘all-time greats and holds the club record with 268 goals, winning the FA Cup in 1962 and 1967 and the European Cup Winners’ Cup in 1963, the same year the club finished second in the former Premier Division

He moved to West Ham as part of a swap deal with the late Martin Peters in 1970, but he started battling alcoholism

Greaves overcame his addiction and continued his career as an expert and co-presented the Saint & Greavsie show alongside his former pro Ian St John between 1985 and 1992

Greaves suffered a stroke in May 2015, which left him in a wheelchair and with severe speech impairment

Flowers, 86, was not a member of the 1966 squad He won 49 caps for his country and has spent most of his professional career with wolves

In a statement released via Tottenham, Greaves said: “I am deeply honored to receive this recognition for service to football by Her Majesty The Queen

“Football has been my life, from the day I started kicking the ball as a kid at home in Essex, to signing for Chelsea at 15 and then in Milan, those wonderful nine years at Spurs, then at West Ham and later my work in TV and in the media

“There have been ups and downs, but this is a game I will always love and always be a part of me I would like to dedicate this award to Irene, my family and my friends Thank you for all your love and your support “

Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy added: “As someone who remains the club’s all-time top scorer to this day, revered by generations of fans across the country for his achievements in the game , we think this recognition is really deserved

“The news means we are ending this tough year on an overwhelmingly positive note – Jimmy continues to inspire us”

Greaves’ son Danny posted a message on Facebook thanking his father’s teammates and colleagues, as well as the audience, for “the extraordinary support, love and kindness you have shown my father for many, many years “

“I think if you’d told my dad, when he was a young boy, that he kicked a ball and just did what he loved to do, that he would be honored by the queen, he probably would have smiled and said something like ‘Yeah, okay’, “Danny wrote
