The flames of the Bridgwater and Taunton College blaze can be seen from miles away – according to local residents
Chris Hutton, who lives near College Way College in Bridgwater, called the fire department at 3.30am today after spotting the building was on fire
Turning outside his house, Mr. Hutton said flames could be seen jumping 20 to 30 feet into the air from the back of the college building
M Hutton also said smoke from the blaze could be seen from as far away as Dunball and around 18 fire trucks were on hand to fight the hell
“There are 18 fire engines and water carriers, as well as five ambulances and 10 police cars,” he said
Firefighters were on the scene all night in an attempt to prevent the blaze from spreading to other parts of the building
All one-story sections of the College Way building are involved in the blaze, the Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service confirmed
Appliances are on site from Bridgwater, Taunton, Burnham-on-Sea, Nether Stowey, Street, Glastonbury, Wellington, Somerton, Cheddar, Winscombe and Weston-super-Mare
Various specialized devices are also on site, as well as crews from neighboring Avon Fire and Rescue
A spokesperson for the Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Services said: ‘This building is 80 meters by 60 meters
“Teams are currently containing the fire and protecting the spread of fire to other parts of the building”
It is not known exactly which part of the building is affected, but local residents report that it is the mechanics and the campus gym
Local people also reported large amounts of smoke billowing from the building and crossing neighboring roads
