There are currently few players in world football who can boast of the same superstar potential that Kylian Mbappe has
It’s only been two and a half years since the French striker lit up the 2018 World Cup and helped his country to glory
Since then, the 22-year-old’s title has steadily increased as he played a vital role in PSG’s journey to the Champions League final last season
While it ultimately ended in a disappointment, this surely isn’t the last we’ll see of Mbappe in the game’s flagship events.
But with his PSG contract expiring at the end of next season and the interest aroused by Real Madrid and Liverpool, where does Mbappe’s future lie?
PSG received the good news this week that Mbappe has decided not to leave the club this summer
Unfortunately for them, the bad news was that he won’t be signing an extension anytime soon either
The club have focused all of their efforts on attaching their two key stars, with a new long-term deal for Neymar set to be finalized
But as reported by the Spanish publication Sport, Mbappe has no plans to agree on any new conditions until the middle of next season at the earliest
“I believe Neymar and Mbappe are going to stay, I have a feeling, and will stay at PSG for a long time,” Pochettino told RMC in a recent interview
“And I have no doubts I’m very optimistic The club are working hard to keep them with us Ney and Kylian are happy They are having fun here”
While the Qatar-backed club are not really cash strapped, they won’t want to lose any of their valuable assets for nothing
By the time Mbappe arrived, his transfer made him the most expensive teenager in football history
But PSG were happy to make such a financial commitment because they knew that unless something really went wrong, Mbappe’s value would only increase over the course of his contract.
That is, until it enters the last 12 months of its offer, at which point its value will begin to decline rapidly
If Mbappe arrived in January without writing an extension, he would be free to discuss conditions with other clubs
The sporting director of PSG remains assured that Mbappe will put pen to paper, but admits that the club will not be held to ransom
“I hope the players are convinced that they are in the right place for a high level and ambitious player,” he told France Football. “We are not going to beg them to stay”

Interest in Liverpool’s Mbappe has been a very loose bond, initially sparked when he revealed his admiration for the club, hailing them “amazing” and “a very good team with a very good manager”
There is no doubt that Jurgen Klopp is a fan, with previous reports suggesting the Liverpool boss tried to charm Mbappe over a stint at Anfield
Any chance Liverpool landed at Mbappe would of course be a question of money, and a direct transfer just isn’t part of the club’s budget
However, if Mbappe decides to see his contract at Parc des Princes, it gives Liverpool a real opportunity to take it on a free
His availability would spark a bidding war among the European elite, with Real Madrid boss Zinedine Zidane claiming it was Mbappe’s ‘dream’ to play at the Bernabeu
But Madrid’s financial woes show no signs of abating anytime soon, and the balance of power seems to be slowly shifting in favor of Premier League clubs
It would take a huge bid from Liverpool to succeed – likely one that would see Mbappe become their best income – but with transfer fees not part of the equation, it’s certainly a more realistic prospect
