The NBA buyout market is slowly building up and the Los Angeles Lakers have signed the biggest name available to Andre Drummond There are still some interesting names in the market as well as some interesting players that could be bought out
Otto Porter Jr is the best case scenario for the Lakers Porter has been included in the trade of Nikola Vucevic and the Lakers should hope the Magic realize that there is no reason to pay Porter for the remainder of the season
Porter’s contract is terrible, but he’s a solid role player who would fit right in with Los Angeles He’d be the last piece of the Lakers’ championship puzzle
But the Lakers need to be prepared in case Porter is not acquired The team are looking to add a three-and-D wing to the roster, so Rob Pelinka is obviously still assessing the market. If not Porter, then who?
Austin Rivers is in the market because it was bought out by the Oklahoma City Thunder after being traded to the New York Knicks The Milwaukee Bucks are currently the pioneers of Rivers, but the Lakers could still play Rivers as an option to backup, isn’t it?
Sorry for all the Los Angeles Lakers fans who want to see Austin Rivers in the purple and gold but that would be a terrible signing The Lakers are trying to improve with the ones they bring to the buyout market, not to get worse by giving someone like Rivers a role on the team
Rivers is just ineffective and wouldn’t add anything to the Lakers Yes he has playoff experience Yes he’s a pretty decent shooter and gives the Lakers another wing which is needed
But everyone in the NBA is a good shot these days and Rivers is far from a productive wing.He is extremely inefficient on the offensive end of basketball and is an below average defensive player.
Rivers has displayed both negative Box Plus / Minus offense and defense in every season of his career He is below par on both sides of the floor and over the course of his career has actually racked up a -37 value over the replacement player
Fun fact: Austin Rivers is the second-worst player in the entire league in VORP since his debut in the 2012-13 season, only being better than Lance Thomas He is also penultimate in BPM since his debut ( among players with 10,000 minutes played) Only Ben McLemore is worse
It would be one thing if Rivers was a sniper and could come off the bench and hit 1-2 three at certain swing points in the game, but that’s not the case. He’s an average three-point shooter at best
And finally, if all of those numbers aren’t convincing enough, Rivers was downright terrible in the NBA Playoffs last season. The Lakers exposed it every chance they could and Rivers shot 257% from beyond the arc and 311% from the field
Austin Rivers is not a good NBA player The Los Angeles Lakers, and any NBA team for that matter, should stay as far away as possible
