PARIS – Forward Memphis Depay scored one goal and put in another as Lyon won 3-2 at Monaco in a moody match where the players almost came to blows at the final whistle Sunday

The players and staff pushed and shoved each other around the center circle as the spirits frayed, prompting the referee to hand out four red cards after the game – two on each side

The loss dealt a blow to Monaco’s title hopes in third place, leaving them four points behind second-placed Paris Saint-Germain and just one point ahead of fourth-placed Lyon with three games to go in a tense title race led by Lille

Monaco had won their last five games, scoring 15 goals and conceding none, and looked to continue their run when Kevin Volland confidently finished on the pass from his hitting partner Wissam Ben Yedder in the 25th minute

After the expulsion of Lyon midfielder Maxence Caqueret in the 70th, Depay’s free kick from the right was greeted by the deafening header of central defender Marcelo seven minutes later

A mistake by Lyon goalkeeper Anthony Lopes led to a penalty for Monaco, which French striker Ben Yedder converted in the 86th for 2-2 in what was his 100th league goal in French football

But 17-year-old Lyon midfielder Rayan Cherki – the latest top prospect to come through the club’s vaunted academy – came off the bench to finish superbly in the 89th with his first touch of the ball

It was an eventful day, as Rennes lost ground in the race for fifth place and a place in the Europa League after a 1-0 defeat at struggling Bordeaux

A red card for Rennes midfielder Steven Nzonzi tipped the scales and 18-year-old striker Sekou Mara punished Rennes with a goal in the 11th minute

The defeat leaves Rennes in seventh place, two points behind Marseille and Lens in fifth, ahead of next weekend’s home game against PSG

Lorient beat Angers 2-0 to move closer to safety in 17th place while Nantes, 18th, bolstered their hopes of survival with a resounding 4-1 victory in Brest

Nîmes drew 2-2 at home against Reims to remain 19th, above relegated Dijon, who lost 5-1 at home to Metz

PSG clinched a 2-1 home win over Lens on Saturday, with coach Mauricio Pochettino resting his prime midfielders ahead of Tuesday’s Champions League semi-final second leg at Manchester City PSG 2-1 trails
