Referee Darren Drysdale faced Ipswich Town midfielder Alan Judge in their Ligue 1 clash with Northampton Town on Tuesday

The showdown took place in the final stages of the 0-0 draw at Portman Road, with the judge appearing to react to something the official said after awarding Northampton a free kick

Drysdale then put his head towards the midfielder before Ipswich’s Flynn Downes and Jack Lankester and Northampton defender Lloyd Jones step in and calm the situation down

And Ipswich has since told Sky Sports News that they haven’t made a formal complaint

A spokesperson said: ‘We will leave it to the authorities to decide whether action needs to be taken’

After the altercation with Judge, Drysdale then sent off the Downes from Ipswich in the dying minutes as the match ended in chaos

Flynn Downes from Ipswich and Jack Lankester and Northampton defender Lloyd Jones stepped in and calmed the situation

Downes was penalized for a foul in midfield and was then shown another card, but it was not clear why, with Ipswich’s Twitter account suggesting it was for dissent or a hand to the face

Paul Lambert’s team has only one victory in six and is 12 points behind automatic promotion places

Drysdale has been a referee since 1988 and worked in the Premier League as an assistant referee He is also a sergeant in the RAF at Waddington and in 2004 he was named Combined Services Sports Official of the Year, due to his work for sport in the RAF

The 49-year-old gained media attention in 2006 after Bradford City’s Dean Windass was given a five-game ban for swearing against him in the parking lot after a home game against Brentford on January 2
