Kelly Oubre Jr of the Golden State Warriors celebrates a 3-point basket during the second half of the team’s NBA basketball game against the Dallas Mavericks in Dallas, Thursday, February 4, 2021
Golden State Warriors forward Kelly Oubre was the subject of countless trade rumors ahead of last week’s deadline, but ultimately stayed put The Dubs decided the offers on the table weren’t good enough, and they’d rather roll the dice to try and re-sign Oubre this offseason.
On Tuesday we got a glimpse of one of the offers Golden State received for its talented swingman. In the latest newsletter from New York Times reporter Marc Stein, he revealed that the Brooklyn Nets had started a Spencer trade. Dinwiddie-Oubre whom the Warriors finally rejected
In any other season, it would be a matter to seriously consider Dinwiddie, 27, is a game keeper tall enough to defend a variety of positions Last season he hit a career-high 206 points and 68 assists decisive per game
The problem is he’s injured He partially tore his ACL in December 2020 and he is set to miss the rest of the season (although he tweeted that he would like to try to come back)
Even though Dinwiddie has made an unexpected comeback this year, he would need time to get back to the starters minutes And this is the time the Warriors can’t really afford, as they are fighting just to make the playoffs playoffs
“While many Oubre business scenarios arose, Golden State was not going to trade him for someone who couldn’t help the team in the short term,” Stein wrote.
Of course, if Golden State decided to pitch a full punt in 2020-21, the team would reap the rewards of the trade next year, as Dinwiddie is under contract for 2021-2022. Presumably the front office didn’t want to demoralize this current roster during a playoff chase, which is fair. But if Dinwiddie comes back in full force and the Warriors miss the playoffs or barely squeal, they could end up kicking each other for not playing long term.
