Ebene News – GB – Roberts’ late header gives Swans vital victory

Swansea City moved up to third place in the Championship after Connor Roberts’ late header gave them a chance victory over Nottingham Forest

Forest were the better team and would have felt tough if the game ended in a goalless draw

But boss Chris Hughton was furious as Roberts’ massive effort won for the hosts with three minutes remaining

Swansea remains firmly in the race for automatic promotion, while Forest places 18th

It was a first loss in five league games for Hughton’s improving side, and it was a loss they didn’t deserve

But Swansea, who has the best defensive record in the EFL, has shown his resilience to secure a 16th clean sheet in 28 league games this season and Roberts has scored with his only clear chance

It was Roberts’ second winner against Forest this season – he also directed the only goal at City Ground in November – while Anthony Knockaert was closest to the visitors when he shot against the woodwork

Just 25 days ago, Forest was beaten 5-1 at Swansea in the FA Cup, when Steve Cooper’s side headed for victory in a battle of two well-modified teams

Swansea’s scoring flurry started in seven minutes that day, but that was another story this time around

Swansea had the best of early possession, although the closest to the breakthrough came when Conor Hourihane shot harmlessly from a distance of 20 yards

Forest’s first threat came from an evil Knockaert cross that Lewis Grabban couldn’t quite connect with, leaving Swansea keeper Freddie Woodman to kick the ball out of the danger zone

It was Knockaert who almost broke the first-half stalemate in stoppage time, when Swansea went out in a short turn and the loaned Fulham winger entered the surface before looping a shot that bounces safely over the top from the bar

Forest had gained confidence as the first half wore on, and they continued to threaten after the break as Knockaert headed widely and Joe Lolley tested Woodman from a distance

Grabban then shot from just over the post before Swansea clinched the points when Jake Bidwell crossed inviting from the left for his other winger Roberts to take home his third goal of the season

Brentford’s derby loss to Queens Park Rangers means the Swans are just one point outside the automatic promotion spots, and they have two games in hand against both the Bees and leaders Norwich City

“I’m not going to sit here and say that we were brilliant in the game, because in some parts of the performance we weren’t, especially with the ball Sometimes we struggled to position ourselves correctly on the pitch and to play with sufficient rhythm and intensity, especially in the first half

“I just thought the game was heading towards a 0-0 draw Forest are a very good team in good shape They have a lot of experienced and talented players

“We just felt in the second half that we needed to make some tactical changes, bring in more offensive players and build up momentum and hope things would turn out a bit. It wasn’t really the case, but in the end we managed to create a good moment to go and win the match

“Delighted with the victory, but knowing that we will have to play better in the next match”

“The performance shows that as a team we are getting closer, but if you look at the last two games we had one draw and lost the other

“That’s the difference between us and Swansea I’m sure they would admit we were the better team and didn’t play as well as they could but they came away with the three points We need to be more clinical

“Even though I thought we were the better team we still had to protect our position and we can’t allow this lack of focus The players all know this is a game we should not only not lose , but also win “
