Ebene News – GB – Schools should remain closed until January 11

School holidays are expected to be extended until January 11 as part of new public health measures discussed at Wednesday’s Cabinet meeting

The government is expected to announce later this evening a partial postponement of the planned reopening of schools after the Christmas break, sources tell the Irish Examiner

This comes as the HSE confirms virus transmission is at an all-time high and the testing system is close to capacity

As part of the government level 5 plan, schools remain open at all levels However, concerns had been raised about the viability of this plan

The Irish National Teachers’ Organization (INTO) on Tuesday called on the government to delay reopening schools as Ireland battles growing number of Covid-19 cases

In a letter to Education Minister Norma Foley, INTO General Secretary John Boyle called for the start of the next school term to be postponed to Monday January 11 “at the earliest”

“INTO remains firmly committed to supporting our 42,000 members in safe workplaces as they strive to teach and support the well-being of their students in school, where children undoubtedly benefit from it, “said M Boyle

“However, it is now becoming very clear that the ability of schools to function normally is at risk of being seriously compromised due to the increased number of staff and students who will have to isolate themselves and / or restrict movement over the weeks after Christmas ”, he added
