Ebene News – GB – Suspected great white shark attack leaves surfer dead

Surfer suffered serious thigh injuries and died after being attacked by shark in Australia

Onlookers removed the unnamed man from the water off Tuncurry Beach in New South Wales (NSW) on Tuesday

But paramedics were unable to revive him and he died of his injuries

Joshua Smyth, New South Wales ambulance inspector, praised members of the public who managed to bring the man down

“Witnesses, including a retired paramedic, did a brave job pulling the patient out of the water and starting CPR before the paramedics arrived,” he said

Surf Lifesaving NSW has closed beaches from Blackhead Beach to One Mile Beach for at least 24 hours, and the Department of Primary Industries is deploying smart ropes at Tuncurry Beach

Drones have been deployed to the area, while photographs of the bite are currently being analyzed by scientists at DPI in an attempt to determine the species and size of the shark

DPI has advised water users and beach goers to follow the NSW SharkSmart Twitter feed or download the SharkSmart app for the latest information on shark movements and sightings

Eight people were killed in shark attacks in Australian waters last year, according to the Taronga Conservation Society which records shark deaths

In January, a Victorian-era man went missing in the waters off Port MacDonnell, South Australia, and his torn wetsuit was later found, but his case has not been recorded as a official shark death
