Ebene News – GB – What is “To Olivia” about and who was Roald Dahl’s wife, Patricia Neal?

Road Dahl is known for their fun, witty and compelling children’s books – from Charlie and the Chocolate Factory to James and the Giant Peach

His life wasn’t all about Wonka bars and Big Friendly Giants, however, as Sky Cinema’s latest film “To Olivia” will reveal.

Directed by John Hay (The Truth About Love, Lost Christmas), this heartbreaking Sky Cinema Original film will explore how Dahl and his wife, Patricia Neal, coped with the loss of their young daughter

So what is the movie about and who is Olivia? This is what you need to know

The film is based on the real events in Dahl and Neal’s life in the year after their daughter Olivia died from measles in 1962, when she was only seven years old.

While Dahl, played by Downton Abbey’s Hugh Bonneville, is considered one of the most talented children’s writers of all time, he also has an unsociable and hostile side, which is explored in the film

The film also examines Neal and Dahl’s relationship as the author mourns Olivia’s death, while also punching his then-wife as she tries to get back to the actress

According to director John Hay, as the film delves into Dahl’s grief, it focuses more on the impact of her behavior on Neal as she attempts to suppress her feelings in order to support her husband. p>

Hay told BT TV: “In a way it’s the Patricia Neal story You start watching a story about Roald Dahl and then you see how he turns his daughter’s death into his grief. and how Patricia must subsume her grief

He added: “We all have experienced grief in different ways and whether you are a movie star or a famous writer, this is something we all go through

“The film goes through the five stages of grief, anger, bargaining, depression, denial and finally acceptance”

Hay said he was a huge fan of Roald Dahl, having read and transported Charlie and the Chocolate Factory as a young boy Over 50 years later, he described making a film about Dahl as a real privilege

Starred in Keeley Hawes’ To Olivia (It’s A Sin, Finding Alice), Neal was an American actress from Tennessee, who married Dahl in 1953

Her roles included WWII widow Helen Benson in The Day the Earth Stood Still (1951) and Emily Eustace Failenson in Breakfast at Tiffany’s (1961)

She then took on the role of housekeeper Alma Brown in Hud – the role she first played in 1963 after the death of her seven-year-old daughter – and won the Oscar for Best Actress

In 1978, Fort Sanders Regional Medical Center in Knoxville dedicated the Patricia Neal Rehabilitation Center to her, through her awareness and advocacy for those suffering from paralysis after her son’s accident

Neal and Dahl met when he moved to New York and the couple married in 1953

The couple spent seven years together in the US before returning to the UK and raising their family in Buckinghamshire, England

The couple welcomed their eldest, Olivia Twenty in 1955, followed by her sister Chantal Sophia “Tessa” in 1957

Theo Matthew was born in 1960 and at the age of just four months a taxi hit him, leaving him with brain damage

The couple then returned to England, where they welcomed Ophelia Magdalena in 1964 and Lucy Neal in 1965
