Boris Johnson was due to chair a key meeting on Wednesday ahead of the announcement, the Daily Telegraph reported

M Williamson is expected to make his announcement in the House of Commons between 330 a.m. and 4 p.m. on Wednesday, December 30

MPs have been recalled following the suspension to push through the Brexit deal agreed on Christmas Eve, with a vote slated for around 2 a.m.30h

This will be followed by an announcement from the Health Secretary following the latest review of England’s Covid levels system, which is scheduled for 3 p.m.

The Prime Minister was due to vote on whether secondary schools could remain closed after the Christmas break on Wednesday at a key meeting, according to the Daily Telegraph

And this morning, M Hancock hinted that further action would be taken, saying today: “The new variant makes transmission of this disease much easier. So we will protect education as much as possible”

It follows increasingly vocal calls to close schools at least temporarily, as the rate of Covid transmission continues in the UK at an alarming rate

Reports were released on Tuesday evening that high schools would remain closed for at least an additional week under government plans, meaning the vast majority of students will not return to class until after mid-January

Ministers have reportedly agreed to delay the return of most students until January 18, while those expected to take GCSEs and A-level will not return to school until January 11, with the aim to slow down the new wave of Covid-19 infections

Professor Neil Ferguson, a member of the Governmental Advisory Group on New and Emerging Respiratory Virus Threats (Nervtag), said school closures might be “necessary” if it was “the only alternative to the exponentially growing number hospitalizations “

Members of the Scientific Advisory Group for Emergencies (Sage), Professor Andrew Hayward and Dr Mike Tildesley, have also suggested a possible “slight delay” for the return of students to the scene

The Prime Minister’s official spokesperson said at a briefing in Westminster on Tuesday: ‘We are still planning a phased opening of schools and we are working to make sure tests are in place
