Looming family court merger sparked outrage after government ignored dozens of legal experts campaigning against the change

Lawyers and politicians have condemned imminent family court merger, warning of devastating results for women and children

A bill combining the Court and the Federal Circuit Court received final approval from the Federal Parliament on Thursday after being passed in the Senate overnight

Morrison government insists change will reduce backlogs with up to 8,000 more cases resolved each year

Shadow Attorney General Mark Dreyfus said the ruling ignored legal services for women and communities, domestic violence experts and 150 organizations working within the system

“This is a terrible betrayal of Australian families by a government of wreckers,” he told Parliament

Attorney General Christian Porter said a single point of entry would simplify the system and reduce confusion for families

He said many of the strongest voices opposed to reform had a vested interest in the delays which led to increased tensions and increased costs

“Families who need to go to court to resolve issues at the end of a relationship have a right to expect the system to help them resolve their affairs quickly, efficiently and at a cost. low as possible, “he said

“Unfortunately, for too many families this has not been the reality, as the system itself has increased the stress and pressure on court users”

Executive Director of Women’s Legal Services Angela Lynch said moving from a specialized tribunal to a generalized model was a strange move

“This is a devastating outcome for families in Australia, for vulnerable children and vulnerable women who are affected by domestic violence,” she told ABC

155 stakeholders in Australia’s #familylaw system signed an open letter led by @CLCsAustralia @womenslegalnsw @thelawcouncil @NATSILS_ to the GA opposing the government’s flawed bill to abolish the Specialized Family Court and stand-alone Press release: https: // tco / ts45WPbybw

The government committed $ 140 million for the courts and the family law system in last year’s budget, including money for a new family law judge, five clerks and support staff

There was also funding for a range of legal programs, but the attorney general said any additional funding must be tied to real reform

She calls for additional funding for the specialist representation of victims of domestic violence who increasingly have to represent themselves

The Law Council of Australia and two former chief justices of the family court also strongly opposed the bill
