The wait is finally over for the more than 64,800 Victorian students who received their Victorian Certificate of Studies (VCE) or Victorian Certificate of Applied Learning (VCAL) results this morning
Faced with an unpredictable year, students demonstrated commitment and resilience as they moved from on-site learning to distance and flexible learning due to the pandemic
Bentleigh High School captain Tia Lambas told the Greek Herald that before receiving her ATAR she was unsure whether she would “cry or scream with happiness” for her family to come to her room
“But I neither did nor I just saw my scores, did a little dance and smiled with pride and relief,” Tia told the Greek Herald
“It was a nice feeling to finally look at my ATAR after what felt like such a lifelong wait and think, ‘I did, I survived the COVID year'”
Tia said being a COVID-19-plagued school captain this year was “not easy”, being unable to host the traditional events the CBC would host
“… We couldn’t speak in assemblies and address the whole school and there were plenty of other things we couldn’t do”
Instead, Tia and her co-captain, Bayden Hill, filmed weekly “Keeping Up with Bentleigh” vlogs that were posted on the Year 12 Facebook page, as well as in the school community.
“We also reached out to local celebrities to extend warm wishes to our cohort, making sure our peers know that they are not alone and that there are people in the world here to support them, “Tia said
“In the end, we really had to think outside the box like never before to stay in touch with the community and help those who were having the most difficulty”
Speaking to The Age, Tia’s mother Mary Lambas said she “slipped the congratulatory cards under the door” at 6:50 a.m.
“I saw her work so hard, not getting what you wanted would have been a bit devastating so I’m really happy for her” said Mary
Tia is looking to study medical imaging, but says what matters most is that the students “made it through the year”
Bentleigh principal Helen Hiotis told ABC News the students deserve to be able to celebrate after an unprecedented year
“These are what I call the students who survived COVID and I am incredibly proud of them this morning,” she said
