Facebook followed through on its threat to ban news sharing on its platforms in Australia following media laws by the Morrison government entering parliament yesterday

In a blog post, the tech giant said the federal government “fundamentally misunderstands” the relationship between the platform and publishers

“This has left us with a difficult choice: to try to comply with a law that ignores the realities of this relationship, or to stop allowing news content on our services in Australia With a heavy heart, we choose the latter, “the post said

“Unfortunately, this means people and news agencies in Australia are now banned from posting news links and sharing or viewing Australian and international news content on Facebook”

Facebook’s move comes despite treasurer Josh Frydenberg and Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg having a phone conversation last month

M Frydenberg said at the time that “Mark Zuckerberg did not convince me to back down”

The tech giant said it would take action if the code was adopted in Australia, which would require it to compensate Australian journalists for content appearing on the platform

Communications Minister Paul Fletcher said this morning on 2GB that the government would “consider” the move carefully, but warned it would lead to more misinformation

“What Facebook itself is saying is that our platform will not be a place where you can get credible and verified information by professional media,” he said.

M Fletcher said the government “is ready” to discuss the issue with Facebook but will not change the code

“This conversation will certainly make us repeat the proposition that if you are doing business in Australia, you must comply with the laws of the land in Australia,” he said on ABC.

He said the Facebook news was “an indicator of the impact” of the Code

“I imagine that on a fairly sober reflection, they will start to worry about what that would mean for the way their platform is viewed”

Independent Senator Jacqui Lambie said she was “very concerned” about the impact on Australian journalism and urged the government to come back to the table with Facebook and even “bow” to the tech giant

“I would ask (the government) to go back to the table and have another chat with Facebook,” she said on Sky

“If that means we have to give a little and bow a little, then maybe it’s worth it

“The best option here is to return to the table and have another discussion”

She said Facebook’s decision will impact media results and the country cannot afford to lose more journalists
