Ebene News – UA – Federal Government’s Half-Price Flight Program Kicks Off Today

Tour operators in Queensland hope that the release of 800,000 half-price plane tickets from today will help counter Easter holiday cancellations following the lockdown of the Brisbane

Cheap flights are part of federal $ 1 $ 2 billion tourism package that aims to get people traveling again

Half-price fares include round-trip travel to centers such as Cairns, Gold Coast, Sunshine Coast, Whitsundays, Alice Springs, Devonport and Broome

Tourism operators in far north Queensland were hoping for a bumper Easter holiday period due to cheap flights, but were dealt a blow when the greater Brisbane area was stranded for three days on Monday evening, after several people have been tested positive for COVID-19

Queensland Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk will decide today whether the lockdown orders will be extended

Tourism Port Douglas and Daintree CEO Tara Bennett said there had been cancellations following the lockdown of Brisbane, thousands of miles from the tropical region

“Reservations were getting stronger every day and we were looking for 85% capacity for the Easter period,” Ms. Bennett said

“But after everything we’ve been through over the last year, I think people felt something was wrong and of course it was

“It’s disappointing considering all the work we have put into creating this demand and being able to open up to holidaymakers who have been retained for so long”

Sydney-based travel agent Claudia Rossi-Hudson said she was receiving calls from customers wondering if they should cancel their trip to far north Queensland following the Brisbane lockdown

“We told them if they go north to Cairns hang in there, these are not hot spots, flights continue, airlines continue to follow these routes,” Ms. Rossi-Hudson

“I’m so desperately sorry for the hoteliers, the bars, it’s a terrible thing to have to face, to have to put all this staff on and now to have to cancel them or make them sit down and twiddling their thumbs”

Ben Woodward, of the CaPTA Group, which runs a series of wildlife parks in Cairns and Port Douglas, said Brisbane’s closure was far from ideal, but he hoped the cheap flights would encourage visitors to spend their vacations in the north

“It seems like a perfect storm when it comes to the weekend right after JobKeeper ended,” M said Woodward

Cairns Airport said several Brisbane services were canceled following the lockdown in the state capital, but interstate flights were proceeding as planned

An airport spokeswoman said nine flights to Melbourne would arrive in the tropical city on Thursday, another 10 from Sydney as well as a handful of flights from Adelaide and Canberra
