A fifth checkpoint will be added at the New South Wales border after more than 300 vehicles have been turned back from Queensland since border restrictions reintroduced

The Limited Access Point on Nerang-Murwillumbah Road will operate from Saturday 8am to 4pm Queensland Time

Electronic gates will be closed to vehicles, except emergency services, outside of these hours

Chief Superintendent Mark Wheeler said a fourth checkpoint, which opened in Kirra around 7 a.m. Thursday, and the new checkpoint on the Nerange-Murwillumbah road would ease traffic jams

“This is a good result for the local community, as these local roads have suffered from traffic jams in the last 10 days, so it should lighten up,” he said

“This morning we spun 375 vehicles containing 840 people that came straight from a hotspot in the Sydney area… or on many occasions they just haven’t proven to our satisfaction that they had not been there, ”he said

“People tell us stories about being outside the Sydney area and when questioned by police they escape their answers and are unable to provide receipts

Chief Superintendent Wheeler said vehicles and emergency service personnel have 24/7 access through the electronic gates on Nerang-Murwillumbah and Tomewin Mountain roads

“We have extremely high traffic volumes, there will be times when emergency services are stuck in traffic and this is not unusual,” he said
