Ebene News – UA – Goulburn Supermax inmate accused of plotting terrorist attacks behind bars

An inmate of Goulburn Supermax prison has been charged with terrorist offenses for allegedly planning attacks on military, police and correctional personnel while behind bars

Australian Federal Police (AFP) said the 24-year-old was an associate of people they said were engaged in terrorism-related activities

The man was already under investigation by the NSW Police High Risk Terrorist Offender Unit, which ended with a police order to keep the man behind bars

Agents from the NSW Joint Counterterrorism Team (JCTT) searched the prisoner’s cell at Goulburn Supermax in October 2019 and reportedly found plans detailing “acts of violent extremism with the community, targeting police, military and prison staff “

AFP Deputy Commissioner Scott Lee said the investigation “uncovered alleged plots to harm the men and women who are trusted by members of our community to keep them safe”

“This shows why it is imperative for our agents to stay ahead of those who wish to use violent means to achieve their own ends

“AFP and our partners will relentlessly investigate and target this type of offense and bring the perpetrators to court”

The NSW Police Deputy Counterterrorism and Special Tactics Commander, Deputy Commissioner Mark Walton, said the JCTT constantly seeks to “identify and halt potential terrorist plans”

He said authorities were monitoring “those at risk of radicalization and detecting those who seek to harm within the community”
