A severe earthquake struck central Croatia, destroying buildings and sending panicked people to flee through rubble-covered streets

Rescuers attempted to remove people from the rubble of collapsed buildings and army troops were sent to the area to help

German research center GFZ for geosciences said magnitude-64 earthquakes struck at a depth of 10 kilometers

Four other people were killed in villages near the city, according to public television HRT

“My town has been completely destroyed. We have dead children,” said the mayor of Petrinja, Darinko Dumbovic, in a statement released by HRT

“It was horrible, shocking, you don’t know what to do, whether it’s to miss or to hide somewhere,” she told The Associated Press

“Most of the center of Petrinja is in a red zone, which means most of the buildings are not usable,” said M Plenkovic

He said the military has 500 barracks ready to house people, while others will be accommodated in hotels and other places nearby

“The army is here to help you. We will have to move some people from Petrinja because it is not sure to be here,” he said.

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said on Twitter that she had spoken with Mr. Plenkovic and instructed an envoy to travel to Croatia as soon as possible

Health officials say a baby was delivered in a tent outside the hospital following the earthquake

Piles of stones, bricks and tiles littered the streets in the aftermath of the earthquake, and cars parked on the road were also damaged by the falling debris

A worker repairing a roof in a village near Petrinja told local news the earthquake knocked him to the ground

The earthquake was felt in Zagreb, where people rushed through the streets, some of which were littered with broken tiles and other debris

Patients and medical staff were evacuated from Sveti Duh Hospital in Zagreb, many remained sitting in chairs in the street wrapped in blankets

In Slovenia, the STA news agency said the country’s only nuclear power plant, located 100 km from the epicenter, had been closed as a precaution

Hungary’s Paks nuclear power plant said in a statement that it had not stopped production despite the earthquake being felt there

Interior Minister Davor Bozinovic said Croatia was waiting for help from the European Union because it had activated the bloc’s emergency mechanism

The last strong earthquake struck in the 1990s, when the picturesque village of Ston on the Adriatic coast was destroyed
