Ebene News – UA – New Zealand opens travel bubble with the Cook Islands

WELLINGTON – New Zealand will open a travel bubble with the Small Cook Islands this month, adopting quarantine-free arrangements similar to those already established with Australia, Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern said

Ardern said the bubble with the South Pacific island state of around 20,000 people will open on May 17 and initially involve around three flights per week

“The non-quarantine round-trip travel is an important step in recovery from Covid-19 in both countries, and a direct result of New Zealand and the Cook Islands’ successful response to the pandemic,” a she declared

The isolated Cook Islands are one of the few places in the world to remain coronavirus-free, as New Zealand has eliminated community transmission and recorded just 25 deaths in a population of five million

The Cook Islands are self-governing in “free association” with New Zealand, which means that while they run their own affairs, the Cook Islands are both New Zealand citizens and Cook Islands nationals

As a result, there are more Expat Cook Islands living in New Zealand than on the Islands

“(The bubble) will mean families can reconnect, business arrangements can resume and Kiwis can take a much-loved winter break and support the tourism industry and the Cook Islands recovery,” Ardern said. p>

A long-awaited travel bubble between New Zealand and Australia opened last month and has been hailed as a major step in restarting a global travel industry ravaged by the pandemic

New Zealand opposition leader Judith Collins says Wellington should now prioritize opening travel bubbles with Tonga and Samoa, two Pacific island countries that have not detected any cases community of Covid-19
