Ebene News – UA – Stefanos Tsitsipas left ‘speechless’ by stunning return of Rafael Nadal to Australian Open

Stefanos Tsitsipas scored a remarkable victory in the Australian Open quarter-finals, fighting back with two sets to beat Rafael Nadal in an epic five-set at Rod Laver Arena

Nadal appeared to be heading for a comfortable victory when he led 6-3, 6-2, but the fifth seed from Greece showed immense determination to get back into the game by winning the third and fourth sets

The decisive moment in the fifth and final set came in Game 11 when Nadal gave up his serve for the second time in the game

This allowed Tsitsipas to serve for the match at 6-5 and despite some nervous moments, he reserved his passage to the semi-final with the 3-6, 2-6, 7-6 (7/4) , 6-4, 7-5 triumph after four hours and five minutes

This will be Tsitsipas’ second appearance in the Australian Open semi-finals He lost to Nadal in three sets in the last four at the 2019 tournament

“I am speechless, I have no words to describe what just happened on the pitch,” Tsitsipas said during his field interview

“It’s an amazing feeling to be able to fight at such a level and just to be able to just leave everything on the pitch

“I started very nervous, I won’t lie But I don’t know what happened after the third set

Nadal, the 2009 Australian Open champion, apparently took command of Wednesday night’s game, having lost just five games in the first two sets

Even when the third set went to a tie-break, it looked like Tsitsipas would face an uphill battle preventing Nadal from completing the match.

But Tsitsipas stayed in the competition by winning the 7-4 breaker, it was the first set second seed Nadal had lost in the tournament and was punctuated by two unusual missed overheads from the Spaniard

A single break from Nadal’s service in the fourth set was enough for Tsitsipas to force the game to a decisive fifth

Neither player gave an inch at the start of the final set and each looked confident in their service matches

Tsitsipas even served a perfect match by shooting four consecutive aces to tie the set at 3-3

Tsitsipas looked on shaky ground when he went down from 0 to 30 while serving for the match

He recovered but missed his first two match points, while Nadal had one break point to force a tie-break in the fifth set

Tsitsipas, however, saved the breaking point and then converted on his third match point to end Nadal’s campaign at Melbourne Park

The victory over Nadal is the second in Tsitsipas’ career, the other to come when he knocked out the Spaniard on clay in the semi-finals of the Madrid Masters 2019

Fourth-seeded Medvedev will take a 19-game winning streak in his semi-final against Tsitsipas after beating compatriot Andrey Rublev 7-5, 6-3, 6-2

Medvedev and Rublev were teammates when Russia won the ATP Cup squad the week before the Australian Open

They were on opposite sides of the net on Wednesday afternoon, with Medvedev dominating his compatriot in the quarter-finals

“But we are all so competitive During the match nothing matters Just need to win… to reach the semi-finals of a grand slam [tournament]”

Medvedev is in a major semifinal for the third time in his career It will be his first appearance in the final four at the Australian Open
