All the action as Tottenham Hotspur play the first leg of their Europa League round of 16 against Austrian club Wolfsberger
Tottenham Hotspur kick off the Europa League round of 16 as they travel to Budapest to face Austrian club Wolfsberger
The new Puskas Arena, home of the Hungarian national team, will host the match as COVID-19 regulations in Austria mean Tottenham could no longer play at Worthersee Stadion in Klagenfurt
This means Jose Mourinho’s men will face the Austrian Bundesliga side in the first leg on neutral territory in Budapest ahead of the second leg at Tottenham Hotspur stadium next week
The Spurs boss is set to overhaul his squad’s selection a bit after a grueling and disappointing week that resulted in an overtime loss to Everton and a difficult loss to Manchester City
With a derby at West Ham United in good shape this weekend, Mourinho will have to turn his team slightly for the European fixture
Whoever puts on the Tottenham shirt and steps onto the pitch, Spurs need to come back to victory and get in good position for the second leg
Our Tottenham correspondent Alasdair Gold hosts a live match blog featuring the action in Budapest
Hojbjerg and Ndombele continue as Mourinho seeks to retain control of the game Sissoko and Alli exit
Good Winks ball in Bergwijn, which silences Lamela but the Argentinian’s shot is blocked
Vinicius chases a loose ball and Bergwijn hits a blocked shot in front of goal
Wolfsberger hits the crossbar with a shot from Wernitznig that hits the woodwork and goes down on goal
Luck for Bale as his shot is stopped and Vinicius cannot reach the stray bullet
This was exactly what Tottenham needed, with various players stepping up and claiming their rights with Jose Mourinho
Wolfsberger helped Spurs, being a little niave in their game and leaving huge gaps for the North London outfit
However, you have to take your chances and Tottenham has been overrun by a bright screen from Dele Alli and a clinical screen from Gareth Bale
Alli has walked the field and he looks dangerous every time he’s in possession
Bale already has an assist and a goal under his belt, this strike showing a flash from old Bale, with the cut in and a powerful shot from the left foot
Lucas Moura also provided a final product to one of his jinking runs, hitting a weak effort in front of the goalkeeper
Even Hugo Lloris managed to get back on track in that first half, making a superb reaction save to tip Vizinger’s head at close range to the crossbar
While Matt Doherty gave man Wolfsberger access to this position, the Irishman was good offensively, playing Bale for his assist and goal
With a score already 3-0, Spurs have taken the tie firmly with only a quarter of both legs gone
Mourinho will no doubt now be tempted to take Son away, following his initial goal, and give Carlos Vinicius 45 minutes to show what he can do
Others could also retire at the break or soon in the second half with Sunday and West Ham in mind
It’s 3-0! Lucas Moura dribbles through the defense and shoots a weak effort past the goalkeeper
Excellent stop by Hugo Lloris, with nice reactions to switch a close header on the bar
It was a nice goal from Gareth Bale He descends to the right, passes Doherty’s pass and the defender walks past him as he cuts inside before the Welshman crushes a shot past the keeper
Dele Alli makes his way into a box and his shot from a tight angle is recorded Dier then headed for the corner
Doherty feeds Bale and he dives into a low cross to bring Son home
His takes a wide shot from the left post after a break He had Dele in a good position
“[This team] could be even stronger with Harry Kane, Giovani Lo Celso or Sergio Reguilon, the players who couldn’t travel”
Overall, this is an understandable alignment from Mourinho with midfielders Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg and Tanguy Ndombele having played a lot of football in recent weeks and in need of rest
In the attacking zones it’s a chance for Gareth Bale and Dele Alli to claim more consistent football. If you have the chance, all you can do is grab it and make it impossible to be excluded again
The same goes for Matt Doherty who has a chance to beat his corner with Serge Aurier who should miss at least the next three games
Carlos Vinicius will be disappointed not to be involved but he will probably have some playing time tonight
The Brazilian hasn’t really impressed in his bench appearances in recent weeks and it’s something he needs to do, like Bale and Alli, but he has been bought out for matches like this when Harry Kane is out Vinicius has so far three goals and three assists to his name in this competition
We’ll find out if Harry Kane has rested or not He certainly hasn’t traveled with the squad and didn’t appear to be in the photos or videos from Wednesday’s practice
If Tottenham could get into a good position in neutral ground against a side that are nine points behind LASK in the Austrian Bundesliga, then it would be good to see younger players being given a few minutes off the bench, but the Spurs must enter this position first
They need to bring last week’s momentum back in a positive direction and I hope those looking to impress will
