It’s that time of year again: it’s time to think about your fifth year options! The players chosen in the first round of the 2018 NFL Draft are approaching the end of their third season in the NFL, which means their teams will have to decide in the coming months whether to exercise the option that will extend their contracts to four-year recruit through Campaign 2022
The equation for year five options will change with this category under the new collective agreement, with options now fully guaranteed when exercised, and pay now determined in part by player performance But the essential question – Has this player shown enough in three seasons to be worth the investment? – remains the same
Below, I’ve looked at every player selected in the first round of the 2018 NFL Draft and provided a yes-no verdict on whether their fifth-year option should be exercised this offseason.
NOTE: For simplicity, the players below are listed in the order they were drafted in 2018 Players are listed here with their current squads; players who have changed teams since their draft are marked with an asterisk
It wasn’t a sure thing at the start of the 2020 season, but Mayfield has made so much progress (TD / INT ratio of 25: 8 with a 62 2018-esque7% completion rate and 958 passers) playing under first-year coach Kevin Stefanski not choosing the option could be a costly mistake The question of a long-term overtime remains open at this point, but at the very least, exercising the option would ease any pressure (and media scrutiny) Mayfield might feel playing into a contract next year
I still believe Barkley can produce at an elite level, even after a knee injury that cost him most of 2020 The big question is, will first-year coach Joe Judge , who was not there when Barkley was drafted, will feel Barkley worth the financial commitment? Or will he come closer to the philosophy of his mentor, Bill Belichick, who is historically reluctant to pay a lot of money to running backs?
I’m confident Darnold can grow into a top quarterback However, in today’s NFL, teams like the Seahawks (in Russell Wilson’s early days) and Chiefs (before needing to paying Patrick Mahomes) showed that building around a relatively inexpensive rookie QB is a proven way to win the Super Bowl With Darnold remaining an unknown amount in the NFL heading into fourth year, it would make sense for the Jets add a quarterback with the second overall pick in next year’s draft and make no additional financial commitments to Darnold Keep in mind that GM Joe Douglas was not yet in the building when Darnold – who plays better than you might think – was selected
Ward leads the Browns in defended passes (18) while making two picks, 46 tackles and a forced fumble Cleveland’s top cornerback is clearly worth a pony
After playing just four games in 2019 injury abbreviation, Chubb racked up 75 sacks and 19 QB wins in 2020, winning Pro Bowl honors Yes, he is currently suffering from an ankle injury that has left him barred from participating in Week 16, but that’s a no-brainer – especially if the Broncos decide to free up some space by parting ways with compatriot Von Miller, who is currently slated to count for $ 22 million against the cap in 2021 , by Over the Cap Miller is a future Hall of Fame member, but he’s also turning 32 next season and going to have an ankle injury that cost him all of 2020
As a two-time All-Pro who has won Pro Bowl nods in each of his three professional seasons, Nelson is sure to end up winning the most lucrative extension granted to a guard in history. the nfl
Look for Allen to land an extension that puts him in Deshaun Watson’s financial stratosphere – or even more, if he can lead Buffalo to the Super Bowl
Smith became constant Bears general manager Ryan Pace hoped he would be Against the Jaguars on Sunday, Smith became the fourth linebacker in 30 years to record two picks and one breakaway in the same game
McGlinchey is Pro Football Focus’s fourth highest rated run blocker – it’s an easy decision I’m more curious if the 49ers will sign veteran left tackle Trent Williams, who is on the verge of signing again. become an unrestricted free agent
Rosen, who recently signed with the 49ers, is not eligible for the fifth-year option because his rookie contract was canceled when he was released by the Dolphins, who acquired him from Cardinals in an exchange last year
After Miami unsuccessfully tried to make Fitzpatrick a jack-of-all-trades defensive back, he was traded to the Steelers, after which he instantly became the money-making machine that the Pittsburgh defense needed to start playing at the elite level again, winning his second straight Pro Bowl sign in 2020 Fitzpatrick has nine picks and two forced fumbles in 29 games with the Steelers so far
The Buccaneers’ defense isn’t nearly as good without Vea – currently on reserve injured with a fractured ankle – plugging the middle On his return, Vea is expected to continue developing his interior passing-running skills while remaining a force of race jam
Payne doesn’t get much media attention on a star-studded defensive line, but the value he brings as someone who does the dirty work is well worth it
Seen as a development prospect when the Saints traded to recruit him, Davenport has yet to fully deliver on his promise, collecting just 15 sacks in 10 appearances this season. He may yet reach the heights the New is looking for. -Orléans, but it will likely be easier to plan an investment in a more proven product in the defensive end position while recognizing that the franchise tag can be used to keep Davenport in 2022, if he has a 2021 breakout campaign.
Miller has proven wrong to those who think he is better suited to play the right tackle, and he will be richly rewarded for it. Miller only has two sacks allowed all season, per PFF
At just 22 right now, Edmunds is only going to get better, especially when it comes to forcing turnovers. So far in 2020 he has racked up 110 tackles (the second highest team) with three defensive passes and a sack
James has looked like a game destroyer when in good health, winning the Pro Bowl and All-Pro as a rookie, but his injury history (James is missing all of 2020 with an injury to the knee after being limited by a stress fracture in his foot to five games in 2019) makes the option too risky If James returns to form, the Chargers could use the franchise tag to keep him in 2022
Alexander is Green Bay’s best cornerback since Charles Woodson’s heyday ten years ago.He holds PFF’s second-best defensive and cover rating among cornerbacks with over 100 shots this season, with an authorized completion rate of 492 percent (fourth best, by PFF)
Vander Esch made the Pro Bowl after an excellent rookie season, in which he recorded 140 tackles, two picks and seven defensive assists, but injuries have kept him from competing at this level since. past seasons he has appeared in just 19 games, with 132 tackles in that span
Ragnow is currently struggling with a fractured throat, but he has become the cornerstone of Detroit’s offensive line, winning a Pro Bowl nod in 2020 while also securing PFF’s second-highest offensive rating among centers (minimum of 100 shots)
Cincinnati’s selection of Price, who has started only one game so far this season, was the definition of reaching to fill a job need after Ragnow left the board
As a former linebacker himself, Titans head coach Mike Vrabel knows the value that a versatile player like Evans, who has 92 tackles, four quarterback hits and four defensive assists, brings to his defensive plan
Wynn has appeared in just 18 career games so far, missing all of 2018, then landing on the injured reserve this season in November. However, the undersized Wynn has shown he can be a solid protector of the blind side and be an integral part of the Patriots’ efforts to rebuild their offense in the years to come
Last season Moore set career highs in receiving (87) and receiving yards (1175) The fact that he is close to finishing with roughly the same total yards while recording fewer catches in 2020 shows his evolution as a major threat in Carolina’s new attack under Matt Rhule Moore currently leads the NFL in yards per catch with 179 (among those with over 50 receptions) while still ranking 10th in receiving yards (1092)
The change of scenery that accompanied Hurst’s trade from Baltimore in March helped him put in his best season yet (52 catches, 543 receiving yards, five receiving touchdowns) while establishing a solid chemistry with quarterback Matt Ryan
A strong argument can be made that Ridley, who ranks fifth in the NFL in receiving yards (1,322) and third in yards per take (161, among those with over 50 catches) replaced Julio Jones as best receiver for the Falcons
Penny has been plagued by the injury bug, but even at 100% he’s not the best running back in the Seattle roster, making it hard to commit to him beyond 2021 at this point
Possessing Pittsburgh’s fourth best cover rating, by PFF, Edmunds has two picks and eight assists this season Steelers will give him a chance to continue building chemistry with Minkah Fitzpatrick

Running backs sometimes fall out of favor in New England, for a host of reasons Michel (63 carries, 373 rushing yards, six TDs in total) hasn’t been able to build on a strong season. rookie, ceding the spotlight this year to Damien Harris, who has proven he can handle the workload as leader of the Patriots
