Ebene News – United States – Impact of COVID: Local families fear state budget cuts in services for people with developmental or intellectual disabilities

LEVITTOWN, NOui (CBSNewYork) – Albany is finalizing this state budget, and cuts to managed care programs are looming

Some families with loved ones living with intellectual or intellectual disabilities fear their case managers will be forced to leave, CBS2’s Jennifer McLogan reported on Wednesday

The Kennedys of Levittown say they have been blinded by a proposal to massively cut funding for new Yokers with intellectual and developmental disabilities that would affect their 27-year-old son, Evan, who has cerebral palsy

“We’ve been through those kinds of cuts, and had to fight for these things, and usually we lose,” said Gail

Evan relies on mom, dad and caregiver Paola Pichardo, who guides him through daily life five days a week

“They are like my second family We have been through a lot together We are like a lifeline, him with me and I with him,” said Pichardo

Coronavirus pandemic forces tough decisions in Albany On top of last year’s cuts – a 39% funding cut for the state’s seven regional care coordinating organizations, which help align and handling the cases of 120,000 marginalized state residents

“Doing this to a vulnerable population is really unacceptable It will put more pressure on families,” said James Moran, CEO of Care Design NY

An Albany spokeswoman said: “… the proposed adjustments to CCO programs will have no impact on the services they provide to New Yorkers… budget negotiations are ongoing…”

“There are tons of places they aren’t going to cut,” said Gail Kennedy, adding, “and they have to look at people like my son and they have to see that he has to live every day, and we too “

The Kennedys, Gail and her husband Patrick say they are aging and worried about impending service cuts now and in the future

The Kennedys want Evan to be with them, not in a group home, but they need funding to continue to help him with his day-to-day care

Advocates say state should use part of Washington funds to ensure continued managed care programs for people with disabilities
