Covering the impact of the coronavirus on the world of sport

It might not have been quite the NBA Finals preview we were hoping for, but the Brooklyn Nets still scored one of their most important wins of the season when they went to Staples Center and beat defending champion Lakers, 109-98 With Anthony Davis, Dennis Schroder and Kevin Durant all out and several Lakers suffering minor injuries during the game, it was hardly the shock of the Titans that we expected, but for Brooklyn this represents another step towards the championship squad they are hoping to build

They entered this West Coast road trip with a somewhat underwhelming 15-12 record, but with four straight wins in the books and three against playoff teams, the Nets appear to be righting the ship and heading for the summit of the Eastern Conference James Harden led the way with 23 points, 11 assists and six rebounds, but it was Brooklyn’s superlative shot that led the way The Nets made 18 3 points en route to victory The Lakers only did eight

The Lakers continue to grapple with Davis’ absence, and with Dennis Schroder ruled out due to league health and safety protocols, it’s also unclear when he’ll return LeBron James is no stranger to carrying weaker teams, but if he is to keep the Lakers in the hunt for the Western Conference seed he will need to play some of the best basketball of his career. Even a night of 32 points, eight rebounds and seven assists was not enough against the Nets

With so many players on the sidelines, it’s hard to get too much out of this game, but there were still a few takeaways from Brooklyn’s victory

The Nets made a calculated move on Thursday that will have repercussions if these teams meet in the final Find out how long LeBron waits before making his move in the post against Jeff Green

LeBron Expects a Double Team He’s doing it for good reason Aside from James-Davis pick-and-roll, the Lakers don’t have a better form of attacking than LeBron James post-ups, and most often this is the result of over-engagement of the defenses Last season, the Lakers scored 1,262 points per possession with James coming off the post For reference, Brooklyn’s entire offense this season scores 1,179 points per possession this season Only Nikola Jokic is more dangerous as a post-passer than LeBron Si you give him a 4 against 3, he will find the open man

Brooklyn didn’t give him the chance LeBron spent his post possessions waiting for doubles that didn’t come Now there are ways to make those doubles Notice DeAndre Jordan rushes in when LeBron gets the shift against Tyler Johnson

Nets put it all on defense LeBron is one of basketball’s fiercest switchhunters. He did it a lot in the competitive part of this game, and the fourth quarterfinals go to have a regular diet If LeBron can have little defenders on him in the post, yes, Brooklyn is going to have to double down and hope for the best

But when they had a defender of the same size in green, they played him straight LeBron won those trades with that turnaround jumper That’s one of his biggest weapons this season But he’s a sacrifice the Nets are willing to make They’d rather LeBron beat them as a goalscorer rather than a passer The numbers support this theory In general, post-passes are more effective than post-shots, and LeBron does no exception But defending LeBron is all about the odds You don’t lock him in You pick the right poison The Lakers scored just 98 points on Thursday The Nets picked correctly

The Nets had 18 points to 3 against the Lakers’ eight, but dump time makes that margin seem smaller than it really was At one point in the third quarter the Nets had made 16 3s and the Lakers had only attempted 17 Think of the huge mathematical advantage that this sort of margin gives the Nets Even with garbage time included, Brooklyn scored 30 more points behind the arc than the Lakers

Asking the Lakers to catch those points on a typical night isn’t exactly an easy task The Lakers and Nets average about the same number of free throw attempts per game The Lakers average about five more points in the paint per night Usually the 3 point gap won’t be that big, but just take a look at who the Lakers are going to play in the playoffs

The teams the Lakers will have to beat if they win the Championship all take a lot of 3’s and shoot the most They all come into games with that mathematical edge, and with the NBA’s offensive baseline stretching more in addition to 3, taking so little (and doing even less) becomes more and more dangerous The Lakers are ranked 25th in 3-point attempt rate and 18th in percentage They are going to be at a disadvantage compared to everyone else

Now can they still win the championship despite this drawback? Yes Absolutely They just did it But this year’s best shooting teams are better than they’ve ever been It’s going to be a lot harder than last season The Lakers could make their lives easier by taking more 3, and adding a single cohesive, high-end catch-and-shoot role player would make a huge difference. But right now they’re bumping into a wall of their own, and it’s blocking everything that ‘they want to do in attack

Ever since Brooklyn acquired James Harden there has been a desire to bounce back with their defense as a weakness. This is reasonable on paper considering how many minutes of the game go without a great man, but in reality it doesn’t ‘just wasn’t true The Nets were ranked 15th for inbound bounce rate on Thursday They shoot 499% of available rebounds It’s as average as average, and against the top teams they tend to do even better

Take this with a grain of salt considering Davis’ absence, but the Lakers are ranked fifth in bounce rate and Brooklyn just tied them at 39 rebounds apiece The Bucks are ranked fourth in bounce rate and the Nets topped them 55-49 The Clippers are ranked sixth and the Nets topped them 50-45 Brooklyn’s 10-1 record against teams above 500 is well known, but much of their success against these top teams seems to be focused on improving rebound When it counts they do very well on glass

Will it hold up in seven games against Joel Embiid or Anthony Davis? It’s hard to say At the very least, it’s probably worth noting that just as the Lakers have a severe shooting disadvantage over their competition, the Nets have a rebound disadvantage against theirs. Five of the top six rebounding teams in the NBA, the Jazz, Sixers, Bucks, Lakers and Clippers, are championship contenders

But one minor rebound inconvenience is a small price to pay for everything Brooklyn pulls from its micro-queues Defense is a real concern, but right now getting killed on the glass just isn’t The Nets have held up fairly well in this regard

We’re back to an 18-point game with just over seven to go, but expect to see the Bench Brigade soon

You love seeing it from Marc Gasol: Dive on the ground to save a stray bullet in a 23 point game to get LeBron the corner 3 This game is impossible to win, but it’s a league habit

Kyle Kuzma made it there, but otherwise had a very good night He’s 16 and 9 with his generally strong defense He and LeBron are the only Lakers who came to play tonight

The rim is just mocking the Lakers at this point Caldwell-Pope’s 3 rattles around the rim for a moment before falling

Marc Gasol being ready to shoot is one of the few bright spots for the Lakers He’s going to have that open look from 3 through the playoffs

Eight quarterback turnovers for the Lakers EIGHT This is what happens when your second and third best offensive players are absent

The Lakers are keeping it close, but they can’t win this thing without making some 3 Brooklyn has 30 more points behind the arc so far tonight

LeBron keeps waiting for that double, he never comes, then he shrugs and hits a turnaround jumper
