VERNON, CT – Eligible local veterans were lucky enough to get their first doses of coronavirus vaccine during Vernon’s pandemic tour of local organizations a stop at the American Legion Post 14 Wednesday

About 50 veterinarians and their families who were eligible for guidelines from the Connecticut Department of Public Health received their vaccine

“This is part of the town of Vernon that makes the vaccine available to anyone who needs it,” said Mayor Daniel Champagne “A lot of people want to relive their lives They just want to get back to normal”

Post 14 Commander Jim George was too happy to respond to City’s offer George is an Air Force Veteran

“It’s probably the most awesome thing we’ve done this year, and the Legion is doing a lot in town,” said George “And the best thing we can do is have it here in our own house “

This level of comfort was apparent moments later, when a veteran came over for his appointment He didn’t have a driver’s license – the typical form of identification – but Legion officials meticulously reviewed other forms of ID to get it signed

Vernon has partnered with Urgent Care of Ellington to distribute vaccines to places like the Vernon Senior Center, the Legion and various places of worship

The city also handed over our veteran care packages on Wednesday They contained personal items like toiletries and face masks Vernon City Administrator and Director of Emergency Management, Michael Purcaro, has said the items came from requests for disaster relief from the Federal Emergency Management Agency and state-issued coronavirus recovery packages and donations from local businesses
