Ebene News – United States – Sportmix pet food recalled after 28 dog deaths

(CBS) – Certain pet food products recalled following the deaths of more than two dozen dogs, FDA said Certain lots of Sportmix dog and cat food manufactured by Midwestern Pet Foods May Contain Life-threatening Levels of aflatoxin, a Poisonous Mold

The FDA said at least 28 dogs were dead and 8 more were said to have been sick The recalled food has been sent to distributors and online retailers across the country

Aflatoxin can grow on corn and other grains which are common ingredients in pet foods Symptoms of aflatoxin related illness include laziness, loss of appetite, vomiting , jaundice and diarrhea, the FDA said

“Several product samples have been tested by the Missouri Department of Agriculture and found to contain very high levels of aflatoxin,” the FDA said

Anyone who purchased the recalled products should dispose of them and ensure that pets and wildlife cannot access them

Sportmix website denies any recall Their FAQ section says:
“Are there any recalls going on? – No, Midwestern Pet Foods has an impeccable safety record, having never had a product recall “
