Milwaukee activated 2018 NL MVP Christian Yelich and fellow outfielder Lorenzo Cain from the injured list and put them in the starting lineup for Monday night’s game in Philadelphia
The Brewers made room for the two former All-Stars by sending first baseman Keston Hiura and outfielder Tyrone Taylor to the alternate training site
“We haven’t activated any players lately, so just activating some players is a change from how last week went for sure,” said Craig Counsell, Director of the Brewers
The Brewers had 17 players on the injured list on Sunday when they lost 16-4 to the Los Angeles Dodgers Yelich has not played since April 11 due to a strain on his lower back, Cain had a left quad strain and last played on April 13
Even with all of those injuries, the Brewers have won three of four against the Dodgers They start a seven-game road trip with a 17-11 score that tied the San Francisco Giants for the best record in the National league
“We’ve done a decent job of winning some games without a few important players so these guys don’t have to do it all,” Counsell said. “Just contribute to the wins”
Yelich is at 333 batting with a 459 base percentages and no homers and an RBI in just nine games Cain, who only played five games last year before retiring, hits 154 with two homers and four RBIs in seven games
“We’ll be safe with these two guys and make them both easier,” Counsell said “I would expect days off for both of them while we go here, especially on this trip over the road, just to see where they are and put their legs under them “
Counsell said Hiura and Taylor would both end up with the Brewers’ Triple-A affiliate in Nashville, Tennessee.
Hiura opened the season as the Brewers’ starting first baseman but was just 152 with a homerun and five RBIs in 26 games He had struck out 32 of his 89 home plate appearances
After posting a 938 OPS in 84 games as a rookie in 2019, Hiura hit 212 with 13 home runs, 32 RBIs and a record 85 strikeouts last season This year he has continued to wrestle and had stopped hitting with power
Hiura noted on Instagram last month that her mother was diagnosed in February with follicular B cell lymphoma, a form of non-Hodgkin lymphoma
“At this point it’s best for Keston, I think, to put himself in a different environment, maybe take a little time here before he starts playing games again, and then goes for a new environment, “Counsell said
“It’s important to us that I think and still truly believe that Keston can be our main first baseman and that he has the ability to be a force in the middle of our roster We weren’t there and it felt like we were moving away from it almost a little further than at one point, ”he said.
Counsell said Daniel Vogelbach will get a lot of the work at first base for now and outfielder Billy McKinney could make appearances there as well.
Hiura, 24, had played second in 2019-20 but rose to first this year when the Brewers signed Kolten Wong, a Gold Glove second baseman in the past two seasons Counsell said the decision to send Hiura to shore was driven entirely by his struggles on set rather than everything he did in his new position.
“I really think it will benefit Keston,” said Counsell “I think it can be a short term thing, and I think he can be back and be a productive offensive player pretty quickly.”
In another move, the Brewers lost right-hander Phil Bickford when the Dodgers called him for waivers The Brewers nominated Bickford for an assignment on Wednesday
