The House of Representatives voted to remove all Confederate statues from inside the Capitol building Legislation passed 285-120

All those who voted against are Republican representatives, currently numbering 211 As expected, dozens of Republicans supported the bill, with 67 voting in favor

Statues proposed for removal include those of former Vice President John Cadlwell Calhoun, James Paul Clarke, former Governor of Arkansas, and Jefferson Davis, former U.S Senator of Mississippi and President of the Confederate States of America

The bill would also replace a bust of Roger Taney, the Supreme Court justice who wrote the infamous Dred Scott v The Sanford ruling, which barred black Americans from becoming US citizens, with one by Thurgood Marshall, the first black judge of the Supreme Court

After the vote, House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer, a Democrat, said in a statement: “Today the House took a stand against injustice and sent a message to the American people that symbols of slavery, segregation and sedition are not welcome in the halls of Congress “

“I am glad to see our bill to remove hate passes in the House. Even though we cannot change our history, we can work to affirm the ideals on which our country was built: the justice and equality for all, ”added Hoyer

“The symbols of slavery and segregation denigrate our Capitol and have no place here The people who worked to enshrine or perpetuate the servitude of African Americans, or prevent them from obtaining full rights and equal, are not worthy of honor in our country “

A number of GOP officials have condemned the move as ‘canceling culture’ and Democrats have pushed critical race theory

Kevin McCarthy, House Republican Minority Leader, was one of 67 members of his party to vote in favor of removing the statues
