Dean Jha has become a national voice during the pandemic, contributing to the analysis of COVID-19 and advising policymakers and officials

School of Public Health Dean Ashish Jha to serve on Rhode Island Lieutenant Governor Daniel McKee’s COVID-19 advisory group The announcement came as McKee prepares to take on the role of Governor of Rhode Island in the place of Gov Gina Raimondo, whose appointment as Commerce Secretary in the Biden administration was approved by the US Senate Committee on Commerce, Science and Transportation Feb. 3 but awaits final confirmation from the rest of the US Senate

Since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, Jha has become a national voice, contributing to COVID-19 analysis and informally advising policymakers and elected officials across the country, including Raimondo

“Dr. Jha is a valuable and important leader in the Rhode Island community” whose national contributions to the pandemic influenced his selection for the committee, wrote Andrea Palagi, director of communications in the office of the lieutenant governor, in an email to the Herald “The new governor looks forward to Dr Jha serving and bringing his expertise to the advisory group,” she said

Group members will advise the new governor on strategies such as viral contagion, vaccine rollout and the safe reopening of schools and businesses, Palagi wrote Jha “will provide data and information as well as in-depth knowledge on the pandemic response to help inform (these) strategies”

Committee members include government officials and other health professionals As of the February 3 press release, “The Mayor of Central Falls, Maria Rivera, and the Director of Smithfield Town, Randy Rossi, have been added as advisers, ”Palagi added

Having previously worked with Rhode Island Health Department Director Nicole Alexander-Scott MPH’11, Jha will be able to continue this collaboration Jha was also “very happy when (Lt. Gov McKee) said he did not plan to make any changes in the leadership of the state “

“Helping Rhode Island is obviously high on my priority list,” so “I’m really excited to be a part” of the advisory group, Jha said
