Many North Carolinians are just recovering from our last winter season, and some still haven’t

More than 100,000 power outages, along with various forms of storm damage, hit much of the state this week, and another, even larger, cycle of ice and rain on Thursday, could cause loss of electricity

Duke Energy predicts the Carolinas could see up to a million power outages as a result of the storm, with outages lasting several days More than 1,300 Duke Energy employees have come from other parts of the country to help with planned service disruptions

Power outages can be extremely difficult and dangerous Here are some quick tips for when you have a power outage and you need to stay warm:

Emergency management teams in Durham overflowed roads and salted bridges on Wednesday afternoon in anticipation of what could be a dangerous situation They also doubled their numbers

James Groves, director of emergency services for Durham, told WRAL that previous ice storms have caused damage and power outages But, they are as prepared as possible, to respond if necessary

“If something bad happens, we have what we call cut and push task groups, and that’s when we cut down the trees [and] push them away to that emergency vehicles can come and go “

WRAL’s Extreme Weather Team says Durham can expect to see moderate impacts from this ice storm Which means up to 1/4 inch of ice, with one to three inches of rain

“Today, in particular, we held coordination meetings with all the management staff of our city and county department, our emergency responders, including hospitals, universities, anything that has emergency services, ”said Groves“ Our crews and the DOT are preparing the pavements They will be doing this throughout this evening Salt is aggregated and put on the bridges to make sure that happens too now “

Orange County officials are encouraging people to prepare their emergency kits for possible prolonged power outages, especially in the northern part of the county

Rescuers say hitting the roads early tomorrow morning isn’t smart Not only could the ice cause you to lose control of your vehicle, crews might also take longer to come and help

“Have a communication plan with your family,” Groves said “Check your friends and neighbors when something like this happens Especially if it’s an extended power outage Make sure the battery your phone stays charged overnight “
