People living in parts of Morris had to evacuate on Tuesday due to an industrial fire involving lithium-ion batteries, and evacuation was deemed mandatory for 24 hours

At 11:42 a.m. Tuesday, the Morris Fire Department was called to the 900 block of East Benton Street over a fire in the former Federal Paper Board building, which was used to store a large amount of lithium batteries

The company now in the building called Superior Battery and there were around 80-100 tons of batteries on the scene

According to authorities, the evacuation was caused by lithium batteries which caught fire, producing smoke containing dangerous particles

Due to the health risk, authorities evacuated the southeast side of Morris – from Washington Street to Evergreen Cemetery (Cemetery Road) in the east to Highway 47 in the west, and from the railway in the north to the river in the south

If you need a place to go, the Grundy County Administrative Building at 1320 Union St is a welcome space

Evacuation is mandatory for 24 hours and is expected to end at 9 p.m. Wednesday, but could be extended depending on conditions

Anyone who sees or smells smoke should self-evacuate and report the location where they detected the smoke. Residents who wish to make such a report or ask questions should call (815) 941-3408

Red Cross volunteers have also set up a drop-in center and overnight shelter to assist evacuated residents at First Christian Church, 455 W Southmor Road in Morris Masks are required at the shelter
